When news reached Mexico of one of history’s great coincidences—the deaths of Jefferson and Adams on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence 200 years ago today—the U.S. Minister there, Joel Poinsett, asked US citizens living in Mexico to wear mourning bands for 30 days.

Getting moving on one of my summer goals: rough draft book proposal. After fits and starts working on it while working other jobs full-time and life happening (including fitting in a narrative nonfiction writing class during Folger long-term exhibit installation), focusing again.

Best way to start @omarvaleriojimenez.bsky.social latest book: curled up on the couch with new-to-us schnauzer with NBA Playoffs on mute in the background.
A schnauzer lying on a couch next to a man reading a book called “Remembering Conquest,” with a basketball game on a television in the background.

At my old stomping grounds Ford’s Theatre for “Written Then, Spoken Now” on @katemasur.bsky.social graphic history of Reconstruction in DC area. Excited to hear words from “Freedom Was In Sight!” & see combo of history and theatre, put together and introduced by the brilliant Alex Wood & Erika Scott
A program for “Written Then, Spoken Now: Freedom Was in Sight!” In front of a stage. Two women with microphones on a historic 1800s theatre stage, introducing a program. Seven people in chairs on a historic 1800s stage.

#TIL, thanks to Lindsay Schakenbach Regele’s new biography of Joel Roberts Poinsett, that Poinsett wasn’t Secretary of State John Quincy Adams’s first choice as U.S. Minister to Mexico. Who was? None other than Andrew Jackson… 😳🤔😮
A book called Flowers, Guns, and Money: Joel Roberts Poinsett and the Paradoxes of American Patriotism, with a deep red cover, outlines of poinsettia flowers, and a drawing of a white man wearing an 1800s suit and a cape. Pictured on a table in a coffee shop, with a mug of coffee beside the book.
