let this be proof that sometimes the best thing you can do for an illustration is to let it go for a bit and come back later

a side by side comparison of a centerpiece drawn for an illustration i am working on for my character boris velasco. the left is from january, the right is from october.

some exploration for my oc Boris' crow beast form 🐦‍⬛❤️

A sketchpage of a crow-like beast with a bare crow-skull for a face, long neck and humanoid body with long feathers tapered along its arms. It's form is covered in shorter feathers, an eerie red glow coming from it's chest and it's eyes. It has long clumps of hair coming from atop its head and pointy ears with golden piercings.
To the left is a fullbody image of the creature, and to the right are two fullbody sketches and a portrait. There are tiny notes around detailing these features.

Description:
I’ve been writing a lot for my comic lately and, without spoiling too much, Boris is supposed to turn into this huge crow beast at the height of the story’s conclusion.
I’ve had it in my head for years, but never actually drew this form! So while I was away from home the last few days, I’ve been doodling some concepts in my hotel room.
The transformation is extremely painful for him, literally coming out from within his bones like a person growing inside of his chest cavity until it breaks apart and this new form is set free. The beast feeds on fear and insecurity, the result of a spiral that had been mounting on him for years and years until he couldn’t keep it away any longer, no one there to help him out of it.

I wanted him to be dark, unsettling and gaunt in appearance while still looking strong and powerful. I haven’t settled on anything just yet but I really like where it’s going and the look of this first draft….

Weirdly, even though his face is a literal crow skull, it still looks like him to me and it makes me soft 😔

lil caw caw…

pookie 1 and 2 because i need some self indulgence lately… 🫠 i don’t know if im alone in this but seeing my ocs do really pedestrian things like, just… walking and standing there? it makes my heart so happy... like yes mr. dead inside and crow mutant man... enjoy a simple stroll!

my characters Connor(left) and Boris(right) walking beside each other, casually talking. Connor is wearing a cap, white tank top and khaki shorts, while Boris is dressed in a black t-shirt and dark utility pants. They are both wearing sneakers.

today is the birthday of my twin mutant ocs, Aka & Rasha 💕 As I do every year, I wanted to draw an illustration for them, but I've been under a lot of stress lately (moving) and cracked under the pressure I had set for myself 🥲 I'll return to this someday, but right now I need to take it easy...

there's something about Park's face that is just insanely satisfying to me. far apart small eyes, big ol schnoss, freckles, unibrow, huge ears. these features just harmonize and shes freakin gorgeoussss 🌱

🕊️ today is my birthday! which means it's also my character Mu's birthday, n every year I illustrate him to celebrate us both. these pieces often reflect my personal life, and this one is no different. so much grieving is laid behind me, and I'm glad to celebrate that, alongside my birthday 🤍

illustration of my character Mu. The image is framed by two large wings protruding from his back, casting shadows across his face. he holds a cage in his hands, opening the tiny gate to let out several white doves, flying towards the viewer.
