Cool wildlife sighting from last weekend- common European viper (Vipera berus) in southern Finland. Spotted by my 5 y.o. Snakes in general give me an ick, but nevertheless it’s cool to see a viper in the wild

A scientific illustration showing the life cycle of a plant Rhynchospora tenuis.

Figure caption:
Schematic representation of the R. tenuis life cycle (2n = 4). Both male and female meiosis proceed without crossovers (achiasmatic inverted meiosis). Male gametogenesis is asymmetric, yielding a single functional sperm nucleus and non-Mendelian segregation. Fertilization restores the diploid state with intact haplotypes, but only heterozygous seeds develop into viable embryos, ensuring faithful restoration of the highly heterozygous parental genome each generation.

Insect declines threaten wildlife far beyond insect world. Apart from being food, insects provide other species with homes, protection, chemical defence and sanitation - to name a few things. Great review article by @r-cooke.bsky.social with BEAUTIFUL visuals. 🧪🪳 www.nature.com/articles/s44...
Visuals demonstrating the following:

Many freshwater fish eat insects
Parrots nest in termite mounds
Chimpanzees use insects on wounds
Poisonous frogs get toxins from ants and beetles.

This new paper (out today in Nature) describes a unique reproductive system, where in spite of sexual reproduction with meiosis and fertilization that lead to seed production, the resulting offspring are all genetically identical to the mother (like in asexual reproduction) How does it happen? 🧪🌱

They are scientific heroes too - models for evolutionary biology research which aims to understand why organisms reproduce sexually (while asexual cloning is faster and more efficient), and for research on biological invasions, as some asexual clones spread globally from their native New Zealand.

This iconic queer snail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, defies binary classifications. Females can produce offspring with or without males, and there are different kinds of males too - some of them are sons of asexual females.
