Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 26/09/2026And I should have put quoted around losing instructional time. Because as I said in the thread free play IS learning. So viewing it as a loss of instructional time is how some view it, but not me. 000
Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 26/09/2026So they can comply with the law without losing instructional time? Because they like the idea of play but in reality adults don’t like giving up control over students? The possibilities are endless 🤷🏻♀️ 110
Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Adults just need to let kids play and stop trying to control how they do it. 210
Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Play is how children learn about the world. It should be encouraged and prioritized, even within academic settings. But turning play into a strict formula so that we can assess its outcomes is not it. 121
Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I get it. Schools need to prove how what they do is beneficial for learning, but here’s the thing… All play is learning!!! And that’s true whether or not a child creates a “play plan”. Ifs true regardless of if there are stated objectives for play. 120
Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 26/09/2026It takes something as magical as play and turns it into an academic pursuit, often stripping away a lot of the joy and creativity inherent to play in the process. 130
Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I cannot stand the way some schools are implementing their version of “play” in which play is tied to specific learning outcomes, kids have to write a “play plan” outlining how they will play, strict procedures for how children will choose play are enforced, and the outcome of their play assessed. 260
Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 26/09/2026As an elementary educator, I LOVE the movement to add more play back into schools. I’m glad my state passed a law mandating play in PreK-1 and encourages it up to grade 5. BUT… 150
Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Yes!!! I love how inclusive running is as a sport! And watching these kids cheer for each other is truly special. Hope your son has a great season!! 010

Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Such a good point! I’m especially concerned about teachers inputting confidential or Personally Identifiable Information into AI so that it can write IEPs, behavior plans, or even report card comments. We’re told not to, but then are told it’s a great ways to reduce the workload 010

Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 16/09/2026And as critical of AI as I am, I get it. Capitalism demands so much and teachers are exhausted. So when admins are like “hey, here’s a tool that will help you regain your work life balance” it’s easy to embrace it 160
Dorie @doriec.bsky.social · 16/09/2026So anything that is marketed as “let us lighten the load!” is quickly (and uncritically) embraced by many 160
