I have comitted SR-IOV crimes. A little extension on the pcie_acs_override patchset zen already ships that also bypasses the "External" checks. This allows me to split the 25GbE Thunderbolt NIC (a ConnectX-4) into 7 VFs (not more, the enclosure doesn't do ARI forwarding, long story, no […]

My BlueField-2, finally I managed to get it flashed. Between the rshim driver's console being broken on my CachyOS install, and the card running custom SecureBoot. So many close calls. But finally, after the last hail mary of trying the default UEFI password […] [Original post on furry.engineer]

I fought very hard for this one log line. But I finally have end-to-end RDMA/SMBDirect between my NixOS NAS and my CachyOS workstation. On an SR-IOV VIF of the card, without running VMs.
Except from dmesg showing a couple log lines, the important one being "VFS: RDMA transport established"

Just dragged out my partner's old X.52 HOTAS because I got an itch to play Project Wingman all off a sudden (yes, its the Jacob Geller video, of course it is). This is genuinely some of the most just visceral fun I've had playing a game on my own and I'm barely 30 minutes into the tutorial mission.

@anthropy It is very philosophical in a way isn't it? You can theoretically travel so close to the speed of light you could visit the entire observable universe pretty much. And upon your return home, no one you remember is still present because thousands of years have gone by.

PSA: Check the thermal paste on your LSI HBAs. Mine just died so I took the heatsink off and the thermal paste was more a thermal solid. Repasted the replacements I got immediately and the paste situation was similarily terrifying. Took a lot of scraping to get it off even.
LSI SAS PCIe card with the heatsink removed showing the exposed chipset as well as the bottom of the heatsink. Covered in what looks and feels like orange cement more than thermal paste.

Anyone know an easy way to get 24V @ 75W out of USB-C with PD? I know even the new 3.1 spec somehow skipped 24V and started with 28V for some reason. I'd rather not rely on PPS support. Is the easiest way to just use 20V@4A and use a boost converter? (Or 28V and buck converter) Or is there […]

I currently have no access to my tape backups because, out of all things, the LSI HBA I use to talk to them died.... So I ordered two so I have a spare. Didn't realize I needed a spare HBA for my tape drives >.< (I do have a spare for the internal one just in case)

Let me show you: The Cisco CPU PnP tool, which is, of course, required to swap CPUs on your Xeon E-2600 based server. I especially highlight a specific excerpt from the beginning of the manual.
A photo showing the Cisco CPU PnP tool in front of its instruction manual, which covers a full 8 pages describing how to remove and replace the heatsink and CPU on a standard server socket.
The tool is also shown together with 3 different adapters for specific revisions of the LGA 2011 socket. The tool looks like a big stamp with a round, bulbous button on top and alignment arrows on the corner.A second photo of the same tool, this time showing the device from its side, revealing it to be a fairly complex construction with springs and mechanical latches triggered by what looks like a big bulbous button on top.Close-up of the manual for the device. The first paragraph reads:

You will use these procedures to move a CPU from one server to another, to replace a faulty CPU or to upgrade from one CPU to another.

After this, there is a second paragraph within a "caution" labelled section:

The CPU pick and place tool shown in Figure 2 and Figure 4 is required to prevent damage to the connection pins between the motherboard and the CPU. Do not attempt this procedure without the required tool, which is included with each CPU option kit.
