New (to me) toy! Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AI-S. So glad I was too cheap to buy a system lens! I played with the Fujifilm 90mm f/2, and it was a good lens, but boring. The 105mm on my Fujifilm is the first digital setup I have had with proper affordances for MF. It feels amazing. // #photography

learned formal photography in the early 90s with tri-x and agfa. it took many (dark) years for digital to be even vaguely capable of working with me. modern sensors… I actually have this look programmed as a preset on my fujifilm. this was literally straight from the camera. bsky.app/profile/doom...

A poem for today. I feel like it’s a pile of stereotypes. There is probably some truth to that. But at least they’re used in a less stereotypical way.

i follow

She walks in the light of a thousand suns,
draped in smoke.
as smoke. the fire, hidden in the murk,
burns.
i follow.
i am tiny in Her diffuse shadow.
i shy from the light She carries forth.
protected by shadow in her black glow.
as a mouse, hidden, i continue.
as a mouse, hidden, i exist.
and if She makes mistakes,
She stops, confused,
chaos looming, ever closer,

to show the way home.

The picture has a history. It's followed me through my life. School, internships, my spouse's apartment, my house. It's sitting to my right, right now! But in 2002, it got lost in shipping. Showed up later, chewed up. My mom got it retouched and reprinted. Handed it back wrapped. Best gift ever. ❤️

Another in-memory-of for today. This is Sherlock. My childhood cat. Died in 1998; I was out of town and he waited. The photo was originally Tri-X on Agfa paper, printed in a high school darkroom. The background is a bunk bed in the house I grew up with. My parents moved out of it soon after.

I do want to gently push back on the framing of “ai art.” It’s absolutely true that people use AI and call it art. But the art isn’t the AI, because AI carries no intent. There could have been artistry upstream of generation. But punching in an obvious keyword and saying “this is art” is *lazy.*
