Doodle No. 280 Bit of a frustrating page today. If it weren't in the diary, I'd scrap it and start over. Stilted posture, characters off-model, and the graphite kept breaking in my substitute pencil, which could also be me or the sharpener I use. Just gotta get it out and over with.

Doodle No. 279 The pencil I've been using to draw these since halfway through September has been worn down to a nub, which has resulted in some awkwardness when trying to fill in small details. New pencils are en route, but I may switch back to the ones I used to use in the meantime.

Doodle No. 278 The warrior's magical hair sprang from a desire to keep her face uncovered, which (in my opinion) necessitated an in-universe explanation for why such a serious, no-nonsense woman, otherwise outfitted from head to toe, would forgo such a crucial bit of kit.

Doodle No. 274 Our protagonist is no stranger to violence. She has killed before and will kill again, an act which no longer begets hesitation. She does not delight in the act, however; she fights for survival, not honor or ego, and I wish I was better at drawing her close-ups on-model.

Doodle No. 273 Girls gotta watch out for each other. The warlock's not just speaking gibberish, I actually wrote out all her spells. Back at the camp she flattered the fire; now, in combat, she calls upon the wind. Both invocations leave her quite open, which is why she couldn't do this alone.

Doodle No. 271 Hands are hard, okay? And before you ask: she has little pockets sewn into her cape; enough to carry knives and a few useful tools. For everything else, she lives off the land, using her familiars to hunt and gather. The cape itself is very comfortable, and makes a good hammock.

Doodle No. 268 Magic in this story is performed through communion with spirits, which requires the channeler to speak with care. Fire spirits are especially capricious, and must be flattered to earn their service. Her familiars at the bridge were shadows bound to masks she had to carve herself.

Doodle No. 267 Ritual time. A lot of modern day "Pop" fantasy really neglects the spiritual aspect of practicing magic. At best you get a kind of magic-as-science, but usually it's mana or something handwavy with zero room for mysticism, which is fine for video games but I ain't about that.
