Not even a great commercial idea, and the whole thing is VC backed and isn’t really a part of the classical music industry at all

Omg a non-music friend sincerely invited me to a candlelit concert thinking it was something I’d be really into and I was like “bro I don’t even know where to begin”

It may be harder than ever to actually be a classical musician in this country, but it’s never been easier to impress normies who have never been inside a concert hall, so, you know, pros and cons

My self-perception just constantly oscillates between “I am talented and special and no one does it like me” and “I only impress people because arts education and access has been so hollowed out in this country for the last few decades that people are now floored by baseline musical competence”

Pop artists in most countries: I love dancing and falling in love :) French pop artists: absent fathers cause unfathomable pain, society is failing its children, the gender binary is stupid, cancer sucks, here’s a song about a guy named jimmy

I’m also relistening to a bunch of his catalogue and he’s done the “calling out famous and powerful guys before it was cool” thing enough times that it’s like, guys, this is just kind of his thing

It’s so funny because I skip Same Love every time (it is actually too cringe for me!) so I keep forgetting he did that! But so many of his other songs about artistic and moral integrity speak to me very deeply and I appreciate his general lack of shame about being authentically silly so

This is not me doing the "I am virtuous because there is a connection between morals and artistic preference" thing this is just me being confused about all of this

Reminds me of when I was in the UK shortly after the 2016 election and upon hearing my American accent, British people would go “so how did you let that happen”

Thesis: WA Mozart was a tremendously talented kid who only became “Mozart” bc his dad created the conditions for him to succeed Reply guys: oooOOOOH but what if a kid ISN’T talented, then they CAN’T become Mozart even with the right conditions and your thesis is wrong! I am very smart!
170
🎹 sharon su @doodlyroses.com · 20/08/2026
Wheeeeeee starting to get replies from guys going “but if you give a kid access without talent then they won’t become great” and that is 1) so fkn obvious, guys, good job, and 2) irrelevant if the dataset you’re working with is talented kids. On this topic we are operating with talent being a given!
160
🎹 sharon su @doodlyroses.com · 20/08/2026
I realize this is on me for not like, posting the entire research paper, but what I was getting at was that talent without access won’t go anywhere. The existence of talent, when your pool is purely “child prodigies/geniuses *who succeeded*” IS A GIVEN bsky.app/profile/dood...
110
🎹 sharon su @doodlyroses.com · 20/08/2026
The talent is a given in these cases (you can’t take a mediocre kid and turn them into a genius prodigy), but the access is a much rarer commodity
