Long overdue. The case for immigration was articulated by Republican leaders as recently as George W. Bush, more famously by Ronald Reagan. The Democrats should not fear speaking out in favor of "welcoming strangers," to use the biblical phrase.

Maybe they should impeach a few justices for ignoring the Constitution and international human rights laws to which we are a signatory.

I understand--Vietnam was a huge albatross--but in the '68 race Nixon promised the southern segregationist Democrats that if they voted for him he would be lax in enforcing the Civil Rights Act. So almost right away, our leaders started chipping away at hard-won civil rights.
