The story on STV and in some of the papers is a bit more muted than the one on the BBC.

Hi, there is better reporting of this in Scotland than on the BBC. As I understand it the researchers have the advert in the Edinburgh Evening News for the 11th Oct 1926, review(s) of the film and 2 of the 3 reels (prevoiusly misslabled as being from 1933).

In order to do a good job, I think, a critic needs broad knowledge of film and the complex that surrounds it. Cinematic language isn't genre or even film specific. Fundamentaly it's the critic's job to assess the film.

Mamoru Oshii is a huge Wajda fanboy. He went to Poland and made a live action film Avalon with a central character called Ash. There is art beyond film. How is cyberpunks delineation of flesh influenced by Beksiński's Sadist's Corset?

Genre critics often don't do genre films any favours, stuck inside their own tiny niche. When have you ever seen a Science Fiction film talked about in terms of Ashes And Diamonds (the most cyberpunk film ever).

Then there is nonsense like The Searchers isn't racist it's a critique of racism. Apache Drums was five years before, Ford was just grudgingly following changing sentiment. How do you comment on Fregonese's church interior without Film Noir?

One of the best jump scares I have ever seen is in Café de Flore, a French art house film about children with Down's Syndrome. How can you explain the structural significance of that without knowing about the conventions of J-Horror, or the J-Horror House without children's television?

I feel that critics that are not reasonably well versed in a variety of genres shortchange both the films and audience. I sometimes review films and I think it is important to understand the context of the film. When I reviewed The Fires I had a look at the geology of that part of Iceland.

Hi, it's quite believable. NZ has a homicide (not murder) rate of about 1.5 per hundred thousand. Auckland is a city that serves a sizeable suburban population. There will be way more people in Auckland than actually live there. People will go there for a night out and drink.

What a twat. I own an Opinel. It opens and locks so it doesn't close on you fingers. It closes and locks so it doesn't open in your pocket. The handle feels nice and the knife has now lasted for almost twenty years.

I don't know much about this case and the media circus surrounding it, but intense public debate about trials has had good come from it e.g. the way Timothy Evans, Derek Bentley and Ruth Ellis played into the abolition of the death penalty in the UK.

Searching "Gaumont and Edison" got me to Phonoscenes (which I could then search on), some of which look a lot like music videos. Too add to everything else she did Alice Guy-Blaché pioneered a lot of it at Gaumont. Thanks.

I don't think anyone is. All mine are alphanumeric, I only memorise 2 or 3. The rest, important ones which can't do damage are written down and everything else I treat as disposable. I never use special characters, I've run into problems with those.

Final destination: Glengarnock Castle. Had it get off my bike and push it up 0.5km of boggy farm track, which was pretty brutal in the heat.

Kenmure Hill Temple, a mysterious octagonal ruin at the top of a hill. Gabriel Semple's tombstone. A large rectangular tombstone propped up against the inside wall of a ruined church. Inscribed with the HEIR LYIS GARIEL SEMPEL BROTHER TO ROBERT SEMPEL OF CRAIGBAIT. the Semple crest and the date AN 1587.A Dead tree with another growing out of it.

Scottish Train Stations of the Post Apocalypse. A tunnel up to the long gone Kilbarchan Railway Station. Now a cycle path connecting to NC7.
A tunnel up to the platform of the long ago demolished Kilbarchan Railway Station. It looks like something out of a post apocalyptic movie. It is now used to access the NC7 cycle route.

A couple of days ago I took a bike ride up to the ruins of Glengarnock Castle. Most of the way is on NC7. Dotted along the Cycle route are works of art, small landmarks along the way. Mostly they have something to do with cycling, then there is this:
Modern art. Brightly painted in multicolour pastels. Several meters in height it is a spiky tower like structure made from wooden beams and and steel brackets.

Quite inaccurate in what he says. "the people who voted for brexit were heavily concentrated in the old industrial and manufacturing heartlands." Just look at the map, the central belt of Scotland, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds all heavily remain. How inaccurate is he being in other places?

Jennie got me the UHD version for my last birthday. It is one of those film where you have to watch the director's cut. Existential expresionist noir Science Fiction, when has that ever been messed up by a voice over.

That Aidan is a lie. The CPS and the courts recognised the moral nuance. From all the charges avalible, assault to attempted murder, the court settled on GBH without intent. That is nuance. When it comes to Russia/Ukraine your statment shows you have no undestanding of the situation.

Firstly isn't that a quite a few politicians these days. Why is that an excuse for hateful language?

Donald Munro @donald-munro.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
Calling people bad for coming to a wrong conclusion in relation to an extremely complex situation, the roots of which go back centuries, and then using hateful language is not what I would call appropriate.

You are the one who has been dehumanised her. You treat her as an object, something to be used as a cheap political point.

Donald Munro @donald-munro.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
So deep down inside you think of her as "that police bitch".

Donald Munro @donald-munro.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
She is a trained police officer, a Sargent. You belittle her, her training and bravery. You obviously see "her" as a political tool rather than as a person. To me the way you refer to her, and other women in politics, is inherently sexist.

Donald Munro @donald-munro.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
Why do you insist that that is what I believe? I don't. Why do you keep ramping up the language. You go from broken to shattered and crippled. Why do you imply that I don't have sympathy. I've known people that have done that job.

Donald Munro @donald-munro.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
Ok Aiden you obviously think it is OK to just make up the law as you go along in order to serve a political purpose. We can all just forget about Mens rea. This is not the first time. RE cyclists being allowed to be on cycle paths. The Law says that it is legal.

If you cared you wouldn't use insulting language towards people or call them cranks behind their backs because you can't understand their train of thought. (Richard Murphy, everyone in Stop The War) You keep ramping up the hate.

In all of this you only refer to her as "the woman", never by her name or rank or as a person. You don't give a shit about her. She is just a pawn to you. Why are you even asking me this, out of the blue, I wasn't there, I'm not the CPS, I wasn't at the trial?

Donald Munro @donald-munro.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
You're point is the defence of an increasingly authoritarian Labour party. I doubt you realy give a shit about the woman.

Donald Munro @donald-munro.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
You keep repeating that. The charge was grievous bodily harm WITHOUT intent. The court didn't find that it was political intent. Your just cheapening the consequences of terrorism.

Donald Munro @donald-munro.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
Corner was convicted of grievous bodily harm WITHOUT intent. He did something stupid in the heat of the moment and should be punished for it. That is not political violence. That is not terrorism. You are trying to make political capital at the expence of people who have suffered.

Donald Munro @donald-munro.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
That's not the point, what you have been posting and reposting is the point. And it is not political violence. Go watch footage of the Omagh bombing's aftermath. That is real political violence.

Aidan, there are real people in the world who have been affected by real terrorism. I've known some, NI (soldiers and civilians) and Sri Lanka. Maybe you should have a good think before you post. PA didn't set out to bomb, kill or kidnap in the name of a cause.

Paul Klee : Calm Sea at Z, 1925 Watercolor, gouache, and pen on paper laid down on cardboard 52.5 x 41.5 cm | 20-2/3 x 16-1/3 in Further description in the alt text 👇
The "Z" in the Title:
Like many of Klee's titles, "Z" adds a touch of mystery or arbitrary notation rather than a direct geographic reference, playing into the artist's poetic naming conventions.

Color Palette:
Dominated by soothing, calm tones, balancing the striking warmth of the sun with the deep, cooling blues and greys of the sea.

Compositional Elements:
Klee employs his signature simplified linework, dividing the space into distinct horizontal bands (sky, water, and horizon) punctuated by the dynamic triangular shape of the boat.
