"I had to use AI in my module because I can't afford an artist!" Did you even ask? The sheer amount of creators out there that are looking for people to write lore for their maps, art, characters, items, etc. is staggering. Put out a call & ask for shares. You'd be amazed at the results.

#CartAugust 29: Map Evolution I too have had a blast this month, sharing maps of my world. The maps of the Triempery have undergone a huge revolution. I will use this thread to show how they changed along the way. The first maps were my efforts, hand-drawn. I used them for writing the stories. 🧵
Map drawn by the author over 20 years ago and used during the writing of the Triempery Revelations series. Earlier and cruder maps exist and have lots of additions, scribbles, changes, and other notes. But this is the one I gave to my friend to make into a map for the first book of the Triempery Revelations series. This is the map my friend and editor, Christina Wooden, made from my hand-drawn map. This map was digital and could be printed in eBooks and print books.

The map is simple, crisp, and easy to read. It gave readers a good sense of the Triempery's scale and lands and major cities. Thanks, Christina! This is the latest, probably final, version of the world map of the Triempery Revelations series, created from the earlier maps by Dominique Strange.

Map shows colored land areas, detailed mountain ranges, the Rill corridor, and major cities. On the left are three shields representing the three empires of the Triempery: Essera (blue), Sordan (green), and Mormantalorus (red).

This map shows the Bounding Fog that limits the ocean and also the Pillars of the Sky mountain range that limits the land area.

#CartAugust 28: Battlefields I asked @domino44maps.bsky.social to make the map below for the final book of the Triempery Revelations series. It shows in close up the scene of the final battle, which is also the major setting of the whole book. There's a fortress at the top. A town at the bottom. 🧵
Site specific map of the final battle of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Map shows the fortress of Elithegh at the top. The fortress has two towers, as described in THE RILL LORD, the final book. At the bottom of the map is the town of Gustan, on the Dazun River, and its nearby Manor. There's a compass on the right. There's also a smaller river, the Orry, on the map, and some forests and hills.

#CartAugust 27: Byways - Most perilous journey The deserts of Sansordan or Lahgael may be the most perilous, but travelers have no reason to go there. Same with the Pillars of the Sky or the Bounding Fog. People may be tempted by the Kragh, or Maw. 🧵 Map by @domino44maps.bsky.social
Map portion showing the King's Road from Gustan to Omadawn. The Kragh region, The Maw, could be used as a shortcut from Omadawn to Kyrbasillon. It is also an alternative if the Road is blocked -- by soldiers, for example.

#CartAugust 26. Highways The Triempery has extensive highways. The map below shows the most famed ones: the King's Road along the Dazun River from Gustan to Merath. The highway running north from Dazunor-Rannuli to Permephedon is called the North Road. 🧵 Map by @domino44maps.bsky.social
Map of Essera showing the King's Road, a highway along the Dazun River at the center of the map between Gustan and Merath, and the North Highway leading from Dazunor-Rannuli to Permephedon. Also seen is the highway leading south from Dazunor-Rannuli to Bellan Toregh in Amallar and eventually Leseos and Gignastha.

#CartAugust 20: Holy places Holy places in the Triempery include the Pillars of the Sky and the Bounding Fog, both clearly god-made and, possibly, inhabited. But the World has more accessible holy sites. First would be Sordan, where the Three were born. [Map by @domino44maps.bsky.social]
On the left is a map showing a close-up of the main axis of the Triempery, the primary Rill corridor from Permephedon (north) to Sordan (south). Both Cities were built by the gods.

The right side is a text excerpt from THE SECOND STONE, book 3 of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. The snip details where the Three, the children of the gods (and also gods themselves) were born in Sordan:

“What are they?” The symbols burned white-gold, orange, and blue within the mysteriously transparent monolith.
“The Signs of the Three, which they wrote themselves onto this stone.” Tiflan spoke before the Ardaenan king could answer. He pointed at the glyphs one by one, from star crown to Rillsign to sword. “Ergeiron. Derlon. Amarantos.”
“Born right here, the three of them,” piped in Endelarin. “Or so legend says.”
       “This very spot?”
“Well, more accurately… there.” Endelarin turned to point at the strangely smooth and metallic, glyph-inscribed depression just behind and below the ledge on which they stood. He looked at Tiflan and shook his head. “Clearly you are falling short in the myth-telling arena.”
The big man glowered. “I am doing well enough. There is a lot of myth to cover.”

#CartAugust 19: Borders The Triempery series covers a LOT of ground. People of different origins and beliefs inhabit this world. As a result there are many borders. Most of these borders are defined by natural features such as rivers and mountain ranges. [Map by @domino44maps.bsky.social]

#CartAugust 16: Spices The most costly spice in the Triempery is ricina, a corm of plants the grow under rocks in the Sansordan and Lahgaelan desert. The corms are prized for their taste and are priced higher than gold. Ricina is gathered using vicious boars. [Map by @domino44maps.bsky.social]
Left side of image is a map portion showing the deserts of Sansordan and Lahgael/Suddekar, which is where the ricina plant grows under rocks. Map shows deserts, a river, and the western shore of a great lake, the Sarkuan. Map by Dominique Strange.

Right side of image is a text excerpt from THE GOD SPEAR, book four of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Text describes the creatures that humans use to hunt ricina:

The lands around Sarkuan are native to beasts large as wolves but stouter of leg and porcine of appearance, with noses that more resemble arms than snouts. They have fierce teeth and foul tempers like boars. Corpse pigs they are called, myrti, because they detect the least trace of any scent and excel at carcasses, both the making and the finding. The Lahgai of the south have domesticated the as guard beasts and have also trained them to find the rare and precious spiceroot of the Sansordan and Lahgaelan deserts.

#CartAugust 13: Minerals Minerals are a foundation of Triemperal wealth. It's a fortunate (for wealth creation) fact that Rill nodes originally served the First Creation's major cities. The melting of those cities in the Devastation created rich ore fields. 🧵 [Map by @domino44maps.bsky.social]
Left side of image is map showing Randpory and Leseos, both Rill ports, which are located near extensive ore fields. Map by Dominique Strange.

Right side is a text excerpt from THE SECOND STONE which highlights how those ore fields were formed.

The point where plateau gave way to plain was famed as a rich ore site, the remains of an ancient city, which the terrible fires of the Devastation had literally melted, depositing vast pools of metals into pockets and layers beneath the surface. The resource-greedy Aryati culture had poured metals from their own world and many others into their mighty cities. Now miners sought those places known in legend to have been the great cities of the Aryati.

#CartAugust 11: Cataclysm Here's a map of the World of the Second Creation. The shows ALL THAT IS LEFT after the destruction of the First Creation in an event known as the Devastation. The Devastation was not nuclear. It was caused by a crazy person and magic.🧵 [map by @domino44maps.bsky.social]
World Map of the setting for the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Map shows the known world, with the sea bordered in white to reflect that its edges are bound by fog and no one can pass. The east has an impassable mountain range.

On the left hand are three shield symbols representing the three empires of the Triempery: Essera (top, winged horse), Sordan (middle winged eagle), and Mormantalorus (bottom, red, a volcano).

Map by Dominique Strange. Text excerpt from THE RILL LORD, sixth and final book of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Quote describes a character reflecting on the destruction--and remnant consequences--of the First Creation's destruction:

But more than just human-set fires worried the sky. Beyond the harbor, far out to sea beyond the veil of the Wall, shimmered the green and violet edges of the Rift. A wound in the fabric that separated the Second Creation’s Three Worlds, it was nonetheless beautiful. Robdan wondered if it was true that the Leur folk had sacrificed their lives to create that barrier to magically maintain their Creation in its three separations. The First Creation’s myriad Worlds archived in a forever past. A single new World in which the Creation continued. And one World, Gsch, forever caught in the moment when the First Creation was destroyed.
Imprisoned by magic, that Devastation had happened and not happened and was yet happening, just on the other side of a fragile shield of living energy, the Last Gift of Leur.
This World was ever but moments away from Devastation.

#Cartaugust 2: Triempery Terra Incognita The World of the Second Creation is, in some ways, unfinished. The gods got interrupted. Remember my hand drawn map from yesterday? Below is the final version. More detail! I'll address the unfinished parts in comments. 🧵 Map by @domino44maps.bsky.social
Color version of the world map of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Map by Dominique Strange.

Three shields represent the three empires of the Triempery: Essera (top, with horse); Sordan (middle, with eagle); and Mormantalorus (bottom, with volcano).

Edges of the map show the Pillars of the Sky (east), a mountain range that cannot be (or at least has never been) crossed.

Edges to the west, north and south show the Bounded Sea. The sea is ringed by a boundary of fog. Ships that sail into the fog come out again at some other place on the ocean -- sometimes far away -- on the known map. Where they might come out again is unpredictable and cannot be used for reliable transit. Some ships never return and their fates are wholly unknown.

#SFFChat Q2: In-world mystery. The great Dazun River, Essera's extensive highway, ends at the sea... maybe. No one has ever found the Dazun's end by land or ship; no one has seen it from the sea. Nothing. After millennia, characters simply puzzle but accept it. Map by @domino44maps.bsky.social
Map of the northern empire of Essera, one of the three empires of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Map by Dominique 44.

The Dazun River (the big one in the center of the map) flows into a great marsh.bog and then... no one knows. The river ends as shown, at the sea, but no one can find that egress from either the river or the sea side. It simply isn't there. But it is there on the map, looking mysteriously fog-bound.

Map also shows all the big cities, and the City of Permephedon (made by gods) and other features of the Triempery novels. Shield is of Essera's symbol, a winged horse.
