Model's first published photos ran in a French pictorial magazine during the 1930s. The Austrian-born American street photographer had secretly snapped some close-cropped images of tourists, and the editors were interested. She and her husband emigrated in 1938 to New York City

Powell was a Tory MP in Wolverhampton. His speech, rife with anti-immigrant sentiment, served as a recruitment tool for the National Front, and the racism that postwar Britain's immigrants had always endured persisted in places like this West Midlands borough, and sometimes resulted in violence

I love Ray Bradbury's apparent reference to his 1950 story "The Veldt" in "There Will Come Soft Rains" (I think "The Veldt" was published months later?): "The nursery walls glowed. Animals took shape: yellow giraffes, blue lions, pink antelopes, lilac panthers [...] the walls lived."
Interior spread, the September 23, 1950 edition of the Saturday Evening Post, story by Ray Bradbury titled “The World the Children Made,” which was later renamed "The Veldt"
