Wish I could still knit because if I could, I’d make Austin Abrams’s delightful sheep hat from RESIDENT EVIL
Austin Abrams in the 2026 Resident Evil. He’s on the phone, his head tilted down, so you can see that he’s wearing a mustard yellow knit hat with a pom pom on top. The hat is decorated with an intarsia pattern of sheep, mostly white with black faces and legs, but one that’s black with a white faces

Today is Wet Hot American Summer Day and Texas Chain Saw Massacre Day but most importantly it’s my wedding anniversary. Look at these babies.
Sarah and her husband Josh on their wedding day. Sarah is wearing a long one-shouldered white dress that makes her look like a Greek goddess. Josh is wearing a gray suit with a blue bow tie. They’re both crouched into a squat with their hands in the prayer position, and they look like they just shared a joke with each other that they’re not going to tell you.

Truly wacky temperature forecast for today
An Apple weather app hour-by-hour temperature forecast. The temperature climbs up to the upper 80s until 11am, then plunges down the the mid-70s around noon, with temperatures forecasted to climb back up into the mid-90s by 6pm.

Man.
Sam Neill as executive officer Vasily in The Hunt for Red October. He’s in a black naval uniform, the camera is looking up at him from a severe angle from the floor, and he has a guarded but intense look on his face. This isn’t the role most people think of when they think of Sam Neill, but it was my introduction to him and I love this performance.

We closed out our time in Pittsburgh by visiting the Westinghouse atom smasher
Sarah and her husband Josh, squatting with their hands pressed together and looking straight at the camera, which is resting on the ground. Behind the two is a giant metal bulb covered in rust and graffiti. It’s maybe thirty feet high? It looks bizarre, definitely a relic of the atomic age.

Buckwild PSA on the last page of my paperback
A PSA at the back of a trade paperback book. The headline says “REMEMBER IT DOESN’T GROW ON TREES” above an illustration of a tree branch with three back teardrops labeled “OIL” coming off the branch. Under the illustration is another line that says “Energy conservation—it’s your chance to save America.” The PSA is credited to the Department of Energy, USA, and Ballantine Books

Thinkin about them
A still from James Cameron’s Aliens. Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is examining a pulse rifle, her shoulder up against the chest of Hicks (Michael Biehn), who’s been showing her how to use it in this scene. They’re both covered in sweat and you can tell that they respect and trust each other—there’s an easiness to how close she is to him. He’s wearing combat armor but she doesn’t think of him as a threat. The screenshot doesn’t show it but they flirt a little in this scene despite the fact that they’re unlikely to get out of their situation alive, and I think that’s both hot and neat.

I loved that family of magazines—Spider especially. I remember liking the little characters that populated the margins of the magazine. They gave vocabulary definitions to the readers but also had their own little story arcs for each issue.
The characters from Spider magazine. Spider (a fuzzy little bug eyed spider), Sonya (a dragonfly), Sam (an orange caterpillar), Miro (a mushroom), Ophelia (a praying mantis), and Thistle (a flea, I think). They’re all hand drawn with ink and colored with watercolors
