White gets WAY more protection than similar "turbo guaranteed wincon in the command zone" decks. Godo is in dogshit colours protection wise, as an example, while Dack here gets Silence, Grand Abolisher, Mother of Runes, etc etc.

Mhm. Artorias being what it was definitely shouldn't be a blueprint for the dozen bosses or so in DS3 as an example, but that's what it was unfortunately, and the game is worse off because of it. They're all the same! Where are my weird arenas? Where are the environmental element?

I think one of the most heartbreaking things to me is that the Margit boss fight is one of Elden Ring's best IMO, but it's almost entirely one of a kind because basically every boss from that point on is fought in a big empty arena where you're asked to press circle in a specific tempo :(

Fromsoft themselves have gradually phased away their older design ethos in favour of more open arenas, elaborate attack patterns that have to be evaded in the same way (dodging, since the bosses also dash so much), and little in the way of elemental/RPG solutions to the fight.

Artorias. A lot of people consider this the best DS1 boss (for a good reason, mind you) but this was because this is one of the very few straight up duels in the game, and this was one with a rich history a dn a cool character behind it. In DS3, everyone is an Artorias, which dampens the occasion.

So now, you have to either joust it, use the tower to your advantage, or try and iframe its attacks as much as possible and dance under its feet (this was MUCH higher risk here than usual, DS1 mechanics and the narrow space make this a suboptimal option, even though many think this is the "correct"-

This is a feature, not a bug. You are now put into a situation where you have a somewhat visible timer to work against before the demon corners you and you inevitably die, while not being able to maneuver around it all that well. This isn't really "testing" your ability to dodge a flurry of blows.

Oh God, I was going crazy over this for such a long time. DS1 and DS2's bosses in many ways were lateral thinking puzzles as much as they were tests of the player's ability to fight a more complex enemy. Think of how stuff like Taurus Demon is fought in a narrow bridge, as a start- (cont)

－Recently, the game has been going viral on X for its beautiful undressing animations. I’ve even read in one of your previous interviews that the development team practiced stripping themselves as reference for the undressing animations. What was the process behind making the animations actually like?

Matsui:

I’d love to know how far that story has spread. It’s true.

First, we write a plot for each undressing scene, then draw storyboards, exactly as the original team did. Then the real work begins, because the animation is essentially all keyed by hand. A designer moves the clothing’s 3D model, frame by frame, manually. It really is pretty much like the claymation method I mentioned.

We did try automating it with physics simulation first, but it was a total failure. The cloth moved in a physically correct way, but had absolutely no allure. We learned a profound lesson: accuracy and sensuality are two unrelated properties. In the end, we accepted that humans would have to do all of it.

Then VR adds its own weight. In a normal game, if something becomes awkward, you can cut away or swap models between scenes. In VR, the player can look from any angle at any time, so none of those tricks are available. The same model has to undress convincingly no matter where you’re standing. When I described this to a designer at another studio, he said, “I would never do that.” I’ve chosen to take it as a compliment.

And then, yes, the part you’ve read about. The undressing motions themselves use motion capture, but the deeper problem was that nobody actually knew the correct rhythm and order in which a person takes off clothes. So, the directors gathered and undressed themselves as reference. “That zipper is coming down too fast.” “She’d pause once before slipping her shoulder out.” These were serious, sober discussions. For compliance reasons, the Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns team works in a walled-off section of our office – and that was the moment those walls truly earned their keep.

This is one of the main things I complain about regarding Ky (especially since the link may not even reach sometimes lol), but otherwise he doesn't really have many actual 1 framers. He does have a large variety of really difficult routes (5H demon links as an example), but not necessary.

In ACPR, Ky's 6K > 2K is a 1f link on standing. That link it really good for giving his meterless grounded hits more juice when he's not in range to do SVT into Javelin loops, but it also means that there's this really nice route that adds a lot of stress to his gameplan if you go for it.
