25 years on, the world still remembers where it was when everything changed. Time stands still around the memory of #September11 2001. The lives lost, families left behind & extraordinary courage of the heroes who ran towards danger so others might live. Today we honour them all. Europe remembers.

This makes a massive amount of sense when you consider the effects that many serious illnesses have on the cardiovascular system and the brain. It's maddening that we live in this ridiculous anti-science world when the majority of people living now simply wouldn't be living without modern medicine.

Update: The academic flight from Twitter is now complete and appears permanent. April 2023, after the pandemic research surge, we recorded 2,234,307 posts sharing research on Twitter. As of April this year, "X" had 896,741 posts about research. That's a 60% drop in traffic.

Great read @katarinazimmer.bsky.social! As an Editor, I encounter excessive self citation in reviewers reports a lot. It's definitely a problem that has gotten worse.

Good case in point that "Impact" can mean many things beyond citations for journals. I'd rather publish a paper like this one then another highly citing paper in a "hot topic" area where it racks up citations, even though it's just another example on the pile.

It's really quite elitist and also makes science less personal and less accessible. There will always be a need for a certain standard to ensure that the science being presented makes sense, but other than that we shouldn't be straight jacketing authors into sounding like an encyclopaedia entry.

In all honesty Matt I would far prefer to be able to hear the authors voice through their writing than have to read through yet another bland AI-corrected bore fest of a review that we get every single day of the week.

How exactly do they think this is going to work in practice? Have they ever even been to a classroom and seen what teachers do? It's not all just sitting there and spewing facts at children and they sit there and learn.

Part of its skills is to condense the literature into long form reviews. As it says, instead of a 2 year writing process, you can now produce ten 100 page reviews in no time at all. What is the point? I look forward to an even bigger flood of reviews topics that authors aren't actually experts in.

This is without getting into Figures of course. Or reviewer reports (for which you are not supposed to use AI). Anyway, please disclose when you use AI if you are going to use it. I'd rather you didn't, but if you must, just disclose.

Dr Jay @doctorgalactic.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
...with fairly obvious tells and yet you look at the acknowledgements and almost without fail AI is not disclosed. If you look up previous submissions from these authors they have suddenly changed from passable English to that somewhat flat formalised way that AI does English.

Dr Jay @doctorgalactic.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
It is getting a little bit frustrating that despite guidance on AI being that authors can use it, but they must disclose it's use that so many authors are simply unwilling to disclose that they've used it. I mean I'm not a flawless AI detector by any means but there are many submissions submitted...

It's genuinely disappointing to here about the poor culture that occurs in many laboratories. Nobody does research, including the research that wins Nobel prizes alone. Maybe it's time to ditch individual prizes and give them to research groups instead?
