My doctor asked me to take my blood pressure a couple of times a day. Turns out it is lowest after fishing. Obviously, I need to do more fishing.
Photo of a 14” rainbow trout in a net. Don’t worry, it’s barbless hooks, catch a release. Photo of the Lowrt Deschutes River, central Oregon, in the evening light. Foreground is the river, slightly mottled surface, steel gray with some golden reflection. In the background, grass covered hills, tan and golden, some trees along the bank, and a blue sky.

What is this absurdity? There were at least 2 players in the baseball field today (Nats vs Angels) wearing socks up to their thighs and pants cut off above the knee. It looks ridiculous. Any idea why?
Somewhat blurry screenshot of Angels player Neto, having just struck out in the 9th, wearing the above mentioned “fashion”

@jamestalarico.bsky.social - repeat after me: All humans deserve dignity. And talking about gender is not going to fix problems for the American people. My focus remains on affordable food, fuel, homes, and healthcare. Let’s talk about that. Use often.

Y’all. Check out The Librarians, which just won an Emmy for exceptional merit in documentary film making. It follows librarians in Texas and Florida (two former homes) as they fight for the first amendment and against book banning. So very proud of everyone. @technolibrary@bsky.social

We have just moved my Aunt into an adult care home, where she can get the care she needs as her dementia and disabilities progress. My mother lived for 8 years in such a home. There are about 430 such places in Portland OR, nearly all of them staffed by immigrants. #ImmigrantsMakeUsGreat

I need to vent. Topic-elder health care. My Aunt (86, in assisted living) was hospitalized for 2 days due to a UTI needing IV antibiotics. She was released late Wednesday, with orders to use a walker. She has dementia, further exacerbated by the UTI. She can’t remember that she can’t walk. 1/6

This photo brings me so much joy. The first grandchild’s wedding for my 91-year old father. But also, he could not have done this 6-months ago. My mother’s long departure left him weakened. He’s so much stronger, and younger today. Hoping he is dancing all all the other grandkids weddings too.
Photo: setting is a garden, Victorian home and large trees in the background, grass underfoot. An old man, in blue slacks and a plaid shirt, glasses and white hair, spinning under the arm of a young woman in a long blue dress, dark curly hair, seen from behind. They are dancing, of course.

Maybe you’re a funny guy. Maybe you got into politics to help folks. But when the bad things you do are monstrous, they must not be glossed over in death.
A screen shot of a post be Michael Fanone:

“Lindsey Graham is dead. I will always remember my first and only encounter with him when he looked the grieving mother of a dead police officer in the face and barked that he wasn't going to listen to her blame Trump for January 6th. When I showed him my body cam footage from that day he turned away and looked at his phone. Rest in Piss you fucking worthless scumbag. If there is a hell I hope you're in it.”

Just finished CS Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters (1942) - letters from a higher-up in hell advising his nephew, who is new to the recruitment job. Here he explains the ties between fear and hatred and advises sow fear to breed hatred. So relevant to today’s MAGA party.
"Cowardice, alone of all the vices, is purely painful... Hatred has its pleasures. It is therefore often the compensation by which a frightened man reimburses himself for the miseries of Fear. The more he fears, the more he will hate. And Hatred is also a great anodyne for shame. To make a deep wound in his charity, you should therefore first defeat his courage."

The SAVE act is not about keeping noncitizens from voting. We have laws for that. It would be the first time in the history of our great country that federal laws were enacted to restrict US citizens’ ability to exercise their constitutional right to vote. I can’t think of anything more shameful.

Another book recommendation for the times. John Fugelsang was raised very Catholic (as was I) and wrote this book to refute, using the bible, the very anti-Jesus message coming from the “Christian” right. It’s scholarly, it’s funny, it’s shocking, and it’s a great gift for your MAGA pals.
Book cover: The Separation of Church and Hate, A sane persons guide to taking back the bible from fundamentalists, fascists, and flock fleecing frauds. By John Fugelsang

The cover is bright red. The words Separation, Church, and Hate, and the author’s name are in black. The other text is in cream. Different fonts are used to make the text stand out.

Friends — did you know that Jesse Jackson was a speaker at the 1st National Conference on Minority Participation in Earth Sciences? This 1972 USGS event sparked a lot of great work before R’s decided to shut it down. I was surprised when I learned of his participation-maybe you are too.
Black and white photo of Jesse Jackson, taken by Don Carl Stefan in 1972. It is a head and shoulders shot of Jackson, arms crossed and looking over his left shoulder and st something off frame to his left.

Jackson here is a young, black man dressed in a dark, collared shirt, light vest. He has a medium-length Afro and a mustache. He is sporting a button that reads “Ingreso adecuado ahora” which means adequate income now.

Finished my hat. I’m very happy with how it turned out. Celtic headband first, switched to smaller needles, picked up 84 stitches along one edge, decreased in 5 places, every other row, and finished with an ichord. Going to give my other 2 Melt the ICE hats away.
Photo of a knitted red cap sitting on an oatmeal colored carpet. The hat has a cabled Celtic knot pattern around the rim, and stockinette stitch crown with spiral decreases. It finishes with a short peak and a tassel. Three knitted red caps arranged in a circle on a white carpet. All three have a peak and a tassel. Two have a wide rib folded back and a flat decrease - in two places, along the side in this view. The third is the cap from the other linked photo.

Making my own hat pattern. Step 1, a Celtic cable brim. Next, I’ll pick up stitches along the moss stitch edge for the hat body. Still deciding how to decrease and finish it, but it is likely to have a point and a tassel.
Photo of a knitting project resting on my leg. It shows about 8 inches of a cable pattern, intertwined and crossing, about 5 inches wide. The yarn is a few orange-red color. There are two stitch markers on the fabric, used for counting rows.

It’s far too early for buds to start showing up here in Central Oregon, at 3500 feet, but we have had unseasonably warm weather this month. It will be interesting to see how these trees cope if it gets cold again. Birch and Crabapple. 2/9/26

For years folks have said they need unrestricted access to guns to protect themselves from the government. Ironically, those folks are more likely to have joined ICE than to be fighting to protect the civil and constitutional rights of their neighbors from reckless, lawless, unrestrained DHS.

ICE shooting latest: Man shot and killed in Minneapolis by federal agents after being wrestled to the ground, police chief confirms

Footage of the incident appeared to show law enforcement officers struggling with a man on the ground before a gunshot is heard.

My current project is an illusion shawl. Depending on the angle of your view, it could look like stripes, or a pattern emerges. Fun project and a nice gift - she has auburn hair. Pattern is Sunshine Shawl, by Mark Jamieson, available on Ravelry.
Half of a hand knitted shawl, on the needles, sitting on a white carpet. The shawl is triangular. It shows a sunburst in deep reds and oranges with a background in blues and greens. A closer up view is the same shawl. You can see horizontal stripes of the orange-red and blue-green, but the sunburst pattern is hard to see.

Loved this dystopian book, although it veers quite close to home in its near-future dystopia (the US President is proudly illiterate.) “She said the church was a broken compass. That our job always and forever was to refuse Apocalypse in all its forms and work cheerfully against it.” ~ pg. 237
Book cover for I Cheerfully Refuse, by Leif Enger. The title is at the top in sans serif white texts and the author’s name at the bottom. It also says “a novel” in smaller text in the center and “Author of Peace Like a River” also in smaller text below the Author’s name.

The cover art is a painting in deep greens and blues showing hills and bodies of water, and and a large fire in the middle-left. There is also a small sailboat on the left side. Much of the story takes place on a sailboat on Lake Superior.
