I never got any music instruction but always wanted to learn; played around with cheap bamboo flutes from Renaissance Fairs for decades, barely learning anything. In my 50s I decided to get serious. Committed to 3-5 minutes a day & read up on scales. Now I can pick one up & play most songs I hear! 😀
My beloved collection of bamboo flutes.

Cute to show the top 20% of earners while the top 1% pay virtually nothing to Social Security while accumulating most of the country’s wealth. These “projections” also don’t address the Republican push to increase retirement ages even further than the last Republican “reforms”, or the SS “deficit.”
As of 2026, the top 1% of households in the U.S. control approximately 32.5% of the total wealth.
This concentration of wealth has reached its highest level since records began in 1989.

I always come back to this quote.
"Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but out of a hope for restored patriotism, or a sense of economic anxiety, or a hope to preserve their religious values, or dislike of their opponents, or raw political opportunism, or convenience, or ignorance, or greed.

That word is "Nazi." Nobody cares about their motives anymore.

They joined what they joined. They lent their support and their moral approval. And, in so doing, they bound themselves to everything that came after. Who cares any more what particular knot they used in the binding?"

Good question. Lots of tools in combination.
kagi.com

Pathologists don't perform a single "water measurement" on the lungs to confirm drowning. The diagnosis relies on a combination of findings, because no single pathologic change is unique to drowning
. The
main tools are:
Gross and histologic lung findings
• Frothy fluid in the airways, lung over-inflation, and (in freshwater cases) acute "water-lung" emphysema; in saltwater cases, prominent edema
2
. These signs
can fade by the time of autopsy, especially after a long submersion interval 2
Diatom testing (the most well-known confirmatory test)
• Lung tissue (and often bone marrow) is acid-digested, and the residue is examined under a microscope or SEM for microscopic algae called diatoms that were in the specific water body The classic protocol (e.g., the Pollard 1998 method) compares diatom species and abundance in the lungs/bone marrow against a sample from the water where the body was found
Biochemistry
• Sodium and potassium ratios in the vitreous humor (eye fluid) are compared to expected values for freshwater vs. saltwater environments to help attribute the cause
Post-mortem CT
• Some labs measure lung tissue density (g/L) and radio-opacity on CT scans and compare them to control (non-drowning) lungs
5
Circumstantial/clinical context
• Body recovered from water, absence of an alternative cause of death, and signs of asphyxia (cyanosis,
Petechiae) all factor into the final determination
In practice, because ~10-20% of fatal drownings are
"dry drownings" (laryngospasm closes the airway before significant water is aspirated), the lungs may show little or no water at all, making the diatom test and biochemical markers especially imortant

Fisher had retired before the end. He hadn't thought of that in years. All the rest of his gallant troops, Boll and Kithrup and Ceri and everyone, had fallen with him at the end. Angharad and the Dervish had fallen even farther than the rest. But Fisher had said he was old and he was done and he'd gone back to his little fishing village to live with his daughter.

Dolly Parton was a talented singer-songwriter, but she was ALSO an ally to the downtrodden and the outcast. During the AIDS epidemic she was a voice of compassion & acceptance when fear & bigotry were the norm. She always kept a welcoming embrace in her words, songs & actions, publicly & privately.
000
DocDanPgh @docdanpgh.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
She was not neutral on culture war issues, at all. A lot of her charitable giving was anonymous but she wasn’t skittish about supporting gays, minorities or other targeted people (including during the height of the AIDS epidemic.)

We're going to hear about how everyone loved
Dolly, and that feels true. But it's good to remember, and to her credit, that she was attacked for her AIDS activism, her vaccine advocacy, her LGBTQ+ support and even, more recently, for her reading initiatives. She ALWAYS stood firm when it mattered.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful.
She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.markjonesespn.bsky.social @markjone... • 12h
Fun fact: Dolly Parton spent decades quietly funding band uniforms and instruments at Black high schools across the South - never once putting her name on it. No headlines, no fanfare — just help, given because it was needed.

It’s interesting to me that Dolly Parton was vocal and stood firm on the issues that our ruling bigots and their media loudly denounce as immoral and she was criticized by them for it, yet the OVERWHELMING reaction to her passing is sadness and admiration. Those bigots are a minority.
