Where I live a lawyer or ex-lawyer is prohibited from serving in juries. I kinda regret that. But in Australia you just show up! Cool! Yes, this is a pseudolaw thing. It'd be fun to write about the legal implications of this court's operation. But I stick to Canada these days.

Nicola & David Suppa reversed the taxation process. They took ordinary Canada Revenue Agency money deposit forms, scribbled on them, declared those were a “Coupon of Money” & demanded the CRA pay them $4,494.530.03. The CRA didn’t pay. The Suppas sued. Didn't work. Shocking. canlii.ca/t/knc62

Notably, half involve a NZ Maori-specific/linked concept base that Biss describes as a novel local adaptation of pseudolaws' more common general structure. Biss concludes Australian & NZ pseudolaw are following different patterns, with distinct (not)-legal reasoning in the 2 jurisdictions.

John is now retired, but we touch base once in awhile. He's no longer really involved in much in the "law world". But when he does get out and participate, this judgment comes up time and again. Pretty pleased with how it turned out!

Happy Meads v Meads day! 14 years! Looking at the CanLII website and my notes, it appears the decision has been cited in 536 court cases worldwide. Not bad for a trial-level decision that, purportedly, is nothing but obiter. If you haven't read it, here's a link: canlii.ca/t/fsvjq (It's long.)

The year isn't over. I wouldn't say we're in some new phase unless without more years of SRL activity that is at least 2 standard deviations off mean. But these are pretty high numbers... Oh hey, the SCC got rid of all filing fees! Do you think that made a difference? Everybody loves a freebee!

But the average frequency of SRL applications is 24.7% (1997-2026). The highest previous frequency is 33.7% (2016). On a Z score calculation, that makes the SRL frequency in 2026 is 3.2 standard deviations off mean. The highest previous deviation was 1.42 standard deviations (2016).

I track self-represented litigant activity at the Supreme Court of Canada. Something might be going on this year. So far SRLs make up 45.7% of appeals (N=308). If activity so far in this year is representative, that means 2026 is among the lowest total new appeal years at the SCC in 30 years.

Some observations are not really a surprise. Like many other European countries, Polish pseudolaw is not so much based on the "Duel of Laws", as a "Duel of States", where the current government is invalid for various reasons As usual, Strawman Theory has a central role. Good stuff!

You don't have to feel it. Just embrace it. (Though the origin of the idea is in the UCC notary protest method, so there's the starting point for your unique authority. In Canada that got much expanded.)

It’s a rare, rare thing when you give people who are lauded as brilliant, extraordinary, and they turn away from the opportunity to exercise power, as they think is best. After all, they’re better than you and me.

I won’t try to summarize because that defeats the purpose. But if you wonder why it seems Canada’s law and the policies imposed via law are so disjointed and out of step with what you see around you, here is an answer. Cycle Toronto v Ontario (Attorney General), 2026 ONCA 582 (canlii.ca/t/kmmft)

And a minority of SCC judges point this out, over and over again. No matter. If you, Canadian reader, are uncomfortable with how Canada’s courts seem to determine and shape so much of our lives, then you should read this judgment. It’s direct, critical, cutting.

The bike lanes judgment broadly conflicts with Supreme Court of Canada operations. That court makes policy with no regard to expense, history, democratic principles. Ok ok they make hand wavey gestures, they “carefully considered” such. Economic data to back that up? Pfah. Who needs that?

It’s not up to judges to make policy and the laws that implement those policies. That authority belongs to elected government officials, and the parliamentary process. Y'know. That democracy thing.

Practically a declaration of war in Canada's modern legal ecosystem, not so different from Luther hammering his 95 theses on the door of the Wittenberg cathedral. The ONCA is explicit. No matter how smart judges may think they are, how much superior they believe their own analyses & perspectives.

Don't usually recommend people read court decisions. Here's an exception. The Ontario Court of Appeal rejects a constitutional "Charter" right to public bike lanes. Which is stupid obvious. But the ONCA goes further. A declaration that judges are not Canada's policy-makers.

To add to the fun, the AI used the formatting and credentials of a genuine transcript service when it composed the false transcript. The SRL got caught, said "Who me!?!?! The AI did it on its own! I gave it access to my files and look what it did! So sorry!!!"

Turns out you can't blame a robot for your litigation misconduct. A Nova Scotia Court of Appeal decision tosses out an appeal where the SRL appellant submitted a transcript of lower court proceedings that was generated by an unidentified LLM AI. The transcript wasn't accurate.

Hey, it's a win-win for me. If he seeks to participate he'll be shot down because his arguments have no merit. If he doesn't participate I can point at Belanger being a less than ideal "bondservant of Christ". *fiendish giggles*

Pointed out he can now intervene in a SCC proceeding on an issue where he argues he has special knowledge. And Belanger for years has claimed he has an obligation as a Bondservant of Christ or something to share his "truths". I don't know what would be funnier. If he intervenes or ignores it.

I'm kinda a shithead. The Supreme Court of Canada has granted leave to an appeal on whether or not oath's of office are constitutional or not, or infringe on religious belief. There's a pseudolaw guru named "minister" Belanger who has argued something like that for years. So I poked him on X.
