Gently bingeing ITV’s 1980s Sherlock Holmes adaptations. Just watched The Norwood Builder, where we first meet Inspector Lestrade as portrayed by Colin Jeavons, perhaps the only performer versatile enough to present Play School and also play Adolf Hitler
Four men looking round a door (L–R): uniformed PC, Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Lestrade, Dr Watson. All except Holmes visibly surprised at what they’re seeing in the room, offscreen

But what about the other half of the basil
Pizza sauce recipe in a 2005 Guardian supplement, extracted from Jamie Oliver’s Italy

‘For the tomato sauce:

extra virgin olive oil
1 clove of garlic, peeled and finely sliced
a bunch of fresh basil, leaves picked
1 x 400g tin of good-quality plum tomatoes
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Heat a saucepan, add a splash of oil and the sliced garlic and cook gently. When the garlic has turned light golden, add half the basil, the tomatoes and a few pinches of salt and pepper.

Cook gently for about 20 minutes, mashing the tomatoes until smooth, then taste, season again and put to one side.’

Twenty-nine years after buying it I’m still irritated by this – from the record company themselves 😡 A low point of EMI’s stewardship of the @bluenoterecords.bsky.social back catalogue. ‘Nah, it’s all right, it’s not as if anyone cares about the covers’ ‘Reid who?’
Copy of Dexter Gordon’s ‘Go’ – an album whose cover is a masterpiece of clean, modernist graphic design – with a whopping great *unremovable* yellow hype sticker slapped over the artist’s surname, like having Alain Ducasse make you a cappon magro and then squirting Daddies sauce all over it

Something quite charming about the idea of having a computerised ticketing system that has to be set up to deal with the age of shillings, tanners and thrupenny bits
Detail of poster below. The concert costs 20 shillings and the tickets are available via the box office or ‘Computicket’

You’d think Oasis would’ve chosen an oasis
Cover of Be Here Now by the band Oasis. The band members, and various random objects, are arranged around an outdoor swimming pool. Partly submerged in the water are a classic red telephone box and a rolls royce

(Being pointed out elsewhere that umbrella already means what ‘sunbrella’ is trying to do) I’ve often thought it interesting that despite our climate British English uses ‘umbrella’ – from Latin umbra (shadow) – when eg French say ‘parapluie’ (against rain) and Germans ‘Regenschirm’ (rain screen)
Guardian headline: ‘Behold the sunbrella, fashion’s stealth accessory for a heatwave’

You probably didn’t start the day thinking ‘what I need to do today is see a picture of the desk of former French prime minister Georges Clemenceau’, but:
Unfeasibly OTT ornate polished wood wraparound workstation that M. Clemenceau must have not so much ‘sat at’ as ‘been enveloped by’

YT algorithm served up a clip from 00s Charlie Sheen sitcom Two and a Half Men where Sheen’s character ‘Charlie Harper’ googles himself. I think we can safely say the second result is a different Charlie Harper
Shot from a TV show of a computer screen displaying a search results page. The top (fake) result is relevant to the plot of the show; the rest are presumably the genuine results of the search term at the time, the second of which refers to Charlie Harper, the lead singer of English punk band UK Subs
