I wonder what a thoughtful discussion about the definition of “merit” would produce. There’s a reason we have hiring and admissions committees instead of just spreadsheets.

PhD students/applicants, postdocs, PIs: brainstorming sessions are happening all over about various ways to support you. When specific research funding facts are known and things are clearer, the plans can crystallize. It’s hard to trust when it’s not public yet, but talk to your leaders!

I get your point, but they did open the game up to anyone who could safely get there, ticket or not. I’m imagining all the dorm residents 1 block away without tix who suddenly got to go. (I lived in Hinton James dorm close to the Smith center in the prior century.)

What someone says they will do and what they actually (can) do may not be the same. Trying not to react to the *talk* until the *action* is clear. Nothing so far prevents me from respecting the dignity of another person, giving to those in need, and working to increase both opportunity and justice.

I'm thankful for the thousands of Federal and State Employees hard at work to restore Western NC. It's a giant task and will take time, but this is what government is for: people helping people
On Wednesday morning, October 23, 2024, the Blue Ridge Parkway opened to traffic from milepost 285.5, at Bamboo Gap, to milepost 305, near Beacon Heights, in the Blowing Rock, North Carolina area. This is the first section of roadway to open in North Carolina since Hurricane Helene. Opening this section of the park provides improved transportation links while communities address ongoing storm recovery on other local routes. he hurricane left tens of thousands of downed trees across the roadway and caused nearly three dozen rock and mud slides. The slides have occurred above and below the road and have also severely damaged or swept away the roadbed in numerous places. To date, crews have reopened over 200 miles of road. Since September 30, 2024, over 100 Blue Ridge Parkway employees, along with over 275 employees from 37 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, representing 64 parks and offices across the NPS, have been on the Parkway assisting with recovery efforts. Their expertise spans a wide variety of roles including sawyers, carpenters, arborists, and equipment operators.
Current conditions and updates can be found on the Blue Ridge Parkway website at https://ow.ly/sxZ750TRz20 and on the park’s social media platforms at @BlueRidgeNPS (Facebook, X and Instagram).

Does the Nobel Prize fit modern science? The lone genius archetype may not even accurately reflect science of old. 1-3 people getting credit for a whole field or for their teams of under-appreciated techs, students, postdocs, and colleagues? Our culture loves heroes, but the narrative has cost.
