Manzanillo accounts for much of Mexico’s illegal traffic. Chemical precursors get in; wood, wildlife and mercury go out. Mislabeling, corrupt authorities, strained port workers, limited scanning and inspection are all factors that help covering criminal activity under legit trade.

Businesses closed early in the morning. On Chapultepec, a main thoroughfare, there’s only one taco stall selling food. Line is long. Doctor behind me says he is buying food for some patients — his hospital ran out of meals. This city is expected to host World Cup matches in a few months.

MX Army killed El Mencho today. A win for Sheinbaum. USG is happy too. The Cartel was quick to react setting buses, trucks and businesses on fire, blockading streets and highways. Locals? Terrified. I’m in Guadalajara, a city that virtually emptied out. No public transport, people sheltered in place

Delivering results for Trump is not necessarily delivering for the folks here who've bear the brunt of conflict here. Much more needs to be addressed beyond more high-profile transfers. btw, this is the view from where I am:

Sheinbaum’s has been military-first. Over 14k troops deployed. Sinaloa now has one soldier per 228 residents. The national average is 1 per 707. Convoys of military vehicles are a regular sight. They’ve helped stop open clashes and blockades—but targeted killings and mass executions haven’t ceased.

Sinaloa is going through its deadliest era in recent history. From Aug 2024 to July 2025, there were 1,763 official homicides and 1,931 people disappeared. A forensic worker told me these numbers might be an undercount. An additional 111 suspects were killed by federal forces

Today marks a year since the Sinaloa Cartel’s two largest factions, Chapitos and Mayos, fell into a deadly wave of infighting after the former kidnapped and rendered “El Mayo” Zambada to U.S. authorities. I visited the state recently for @crisisgroup.org and this is some of what I saw.
