saw the breeders at the castro. excellent show, plus I ran into a friend I was in a band with a long time ago. It’s hard to believe how much time has passed.

It’s a weird time to be any kind of software developer. Thrilled to get to reconnect with old friends and talk about it at this year’s #wwdc

I spent New Year’s in Berlin. I found the murals on what remain of the Berlin Wall to be powerful. Messages of resistance to tyranny, hope, and freedom for all.
A mural with many years from 1961-1989 on it: “escape is a mighty method to destabilize dominion”A mural: “say yes to freedom peace dignity and respect for all”A beautiful mural, mostly swirls of black and whiteA mural of a winged person carrying another over a field of blue sky and green grass, bicycles in the foreground

Yesterday I attended a recording studio crawl hosted by the Audio Engineering Society. What an inspiring day! I saw spaces for recording podcasts, audiobooks, bands, and mixing film scores. Even a Foley pit and some high end Atmos setups. What a great day

Finally got to bike the new closed section of the Great Highway near Ocean Beach. Gorgeous! I love the art and how inviting it is to pedestrians, bikers, roller skaters, kids, and adults…everyone.

I watched some people play Ice, a competitive game about exploring and retrieving artifacts buried under the ice. The board game is 3D and you reveal buried layers under the ice by removing tiles.

Vantage is a game I came so close to picking up. Coop, you and the other players are exploring a planet. As you move around the planet you visit locations and communicate what you see to others by describing beautiful paintings of what you can see. Lots of strategy and replayability

If you use iMessage for private communications, you should consider enabling Advanced Data Protection and setting an account recovery key. This ensures that even if Apple is hacked or forced to turn over data stored on its servers, your messages are not readable.
"Because Apple does not have the keys required to recover your data, only your account recovery methods can help you get your data back if you lose access. Device Backup, Reminders, Messages Backup, Safari Bookmarks, iCloud Drive, Siri Shortcuts, Notes, Voice Memos, Photos, Wallet Passes"

If you see this, post a picture taken in the mountains. One of my favorites, this was taken from the top of the Aguille du Midi in Chamonix, France. The peak is about 12,000ft and is reached via a precarious cable car ride. Not part of any resort, some people manage to ski down from this view.
from atop the clouds a peak of untouched snow fills the bottom half of the photo. there are additional snow topped peaks to the left and right

The NYT covid data report, once regularly updated, is now completely useless and out of date.
Text saying: "With the end of the Covid-19 public health emergency in the United States, the C.D.C. is modifying what data it releases and ending some datasets that are displayed in the tracker. We are pausing data updates as we assess the impact of these changes. We intend to resume updates as soon as possible."

This part of that verge article on today’s 230 decisions, about algorithmic recommendation systems, is particularly interesting
The interpretation may deal a blow to one common argument for adding special liability to social media: the claim that recommendation systems go above and beyond simply hosting content and explicitly encourage that content. This ruling’s reasoning suggests that simply recommending something on an “agnostic” basis — as opposed to, in one hypothetical from Thomas, creating a system that “consciously and selectively chose to promote content provided by a particular terrorist group” — isn’t an active form of encouragement.
