Dolly Parton supported so many important causes, among them donating a million dollars to COVID vaccine research early in the pandemic, which saved millions of lives. She will always be remembered as a champion of the people.

I started my PhD program with an eight week old at home, sole income being my doctoral stipend, in a history program, in Knoxville, TN. And every month we got a new book to read to my son, free, mailed to us, so my kid, my kids, grew up in rooms full of books even when I had no money. That's Dolly.

Remember that if you got the Moderna Covid vaccine, you have Dolly Parton to thank, she gave the largest individual contribution toward their research to make it possible.

If you think this (and eventual tax treatment and advantages) is somehow unfair, you’re not taking into account the -risk- shareholders take in buying the stock of any company. There’s no guarantee they’ll make money. They could certainly lose, based on a multitude if different factors.

Share buybacks have been deemed more beneficial (for shareholders, remember) because Apple feels (based on things they know) that the cash is better used for retiring shares (they are -retired- and removed from the market) than any of the other options.

They can (and in the past, they did) hold large amounts of cash and invested it. Eventually they decided to go cash neutral and then eventually take in some debt, over a period of many years. If you look at their financials for the last 20 or 25 years you’ll see the historical progression of this.

Dividends are good, but it’s a forced distribution quarterly to shareholders, who then have no control of timing. (Don’t complain about timing of these things, as investment strategy, because that’s not being realistic about how things work).

They already spend tons on R&D, so forget that one. They won’t R&D things just to throw money at the wall. They buy other companies when the fit and technology is strategically right, but none large enough to dent the necessary use of cash. They won’t buy Disney just to spend, for instance.

All of the hundreds of billions that went into share buybacks had to go somewhere. The choices are: spend on R&D; buy other companies; dividends; share buybacks; or hold the cash and invest it. This is done on behalf of the shareholders: what does Apple feel is the best use of all that money.

David Miller @dmiller62.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
That’s not true. Stock buybacks eventually tend to increase the price of shares. When shareholders sell those shares, they pay capital gains tax in the gains. More gain from buybacks = more taxes paid.

Don’t be ridiculous. Workers were paid salary and benefits. That’s what’s due to someone who’s solely an employee. Workers were also free to invest in Apple stock as much as they wanted and participate in the end benefits of buybacks and dividends, the same as all other shareholders.

I did that to myself 30 years ago. The surgery and recovery/getting it to work again weren’t fun. All I can say is 😒 every time it happens to a pro athlete. Achilles is under such stress, you wonder that it doesn’t happen more often.

Trump, surrounded by sycophants, lickspittles and toadies who praise and worship him in his gilded palace, can’t imagine why his subjects aren’t eager to trade their constitutional republic and rights for his will, since he knows more than anyone else about everything.

The lesson of history is that tyrants cannot be appeased. Appeasement only feeds their insatiable hunger for power. Tyrants prey on people who feel unsafe and vulnerable. But without mass submission, a tyrant is powerless. Remember this.

No proof this actually happened - the only source being that Trump said it. O different than a “Dear Sir” story. The amount is pathetically tiny related to any distribution of it.

For me, I want all of the detail, so I can crop in, find new things inside of them, and also make prints, sometimes very large prints. For casual glancing at images scaled down on a screen, you’re right:

(Of “course”, Bluesky dumbs down both of the original images unevenly, so the iPhone actually seems better than it is in comparison. I’ll leave those up. The detailed crops attached tell the real story).

So, bottom line is: iPhone 17 is amazing for what it can do with essentially no size and weight, physically tiny optics and sensor, vs massively larger and heavier (and much more $$$$) Canon and advanced optics. It’s the reason to carry the Canon equipment around for things that aren’t casual.

(iPhone HEIC image adjusted in Lightroom Classic to match the Canon RAW color as closely as possible) Now, at first glance, you say “how great the iPhone is, I can barely tell these apart), but zoom in and look more closely. Here are a few top bottom detail comparisons: (obviously Canon on top)
