there's a guy on twitter in the mid 2010s who has a DSLR camera and takes pictures of his family holidays and he wears all beige and tan and is experimenting with zettelkasten and he has enough software now let's make some for somebody else

You can use iroh just for the networking like a trustworthy, P2P socket. I'm curious how you're using SQLite snapshots tho, litestream + LTX?

Orca has a nice mobile app that has non-terminal UI. Curious what kind of plugins you rely on? The only plugin that has stickied for me so far is the pi-subagents one.

I also said this about the original Control ngl. I almost missed out on AW2 for how boring Control 1 was.

Is polytoken closed source?? Right now, I'm playing with www.onorca.dev but really, pi.dev / omp.sh on tmux is still hard to beat. The tmux commands allow the agents to interact with other windows and the pi extensions go a long long way. For on the go, I use zedra.dev.

But even if they don't, let's not forget the fact that every new non-tech outfit I encounter uses claude code means that they also use github, supabase and n other technical marvels long restricted to the priestly class. The fresh air is appreciated. The political rebalance is not one sided.

I see people that are really moving the needle out here. I think we'll be dining on some really good software soon. Though, I must fear, this hinges on weather these cultures survive first contact with it which is not a guarantee.

A big hope I have is that AI does just as much if not more for KDE, jailbreaks and projects that seek to ungrip big tech as it does for the gripping hand.

The only time anyone heard about truly commons and politically impactful projects that "freed software" were when they begged for money once a year.

Any meaningful work done using computers was packaged up in some adversarial saas platform. The internet was facebook. Sure, these saas were using gcc but who was using emacs?

I believe a big part of this was because while modern FOSS launders the ethical aesthetics of its early champions. Most of FOSS is what, CNCF projects written for/by hyperscalers selling adtech or worse?

dman-os @dman-os.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
F/OSS was one of the biggest buzzwords back when AI arrived at the scene. Bigger than ever. But at the same time, people complaining about bad software, in almost all sense of the word, was at an all time high. Why was that?
100
dman-os @dman-os.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
But also, hear me out on this hot one, I think "the AI wave has shone a harsh light on the ethical hollowness of (some) modern F/OSS".

dman-os @dman-os.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
This right here. Writing difficult code was *the* value in some OSS projects for sure but in most valuable ones, it was the people maintaining it for years and tackling with hard and new problems not tackled before. Don't quote me on the number but 99% of new AI github projects are soon abandoned.

One of the main users of this is astryx.atmeta.com and my understanding is that stylex was chosen to allow user freedom in how you style things. I.e. you could use tailwinds or your own styling solution on astryx. Can't say how it achieves this or why it's better tho.

Been wanting a non-Gnome scrolling wm forever and Niri was an immediate yes. Very polished too. I still get a bit disoriented with the "niri way" tho so I used pinned workspaces.

On the group case, how will you get around the `k` parameter issue? Under automerge causal encryption, that retains all the keys but here, if you want a member that dropped out to be able to access all new history when they log back in. Are you doing extra ratcheting besides BeeKEM?

yeah but mobile apps are non-negotiable if you're trying to reach grandma? Chrome on mobile is anemic, Firefox doesn't run well. The android OSes hamstring web for precisely these reasons and you gotta play by their rules for now.
