Really terrific articles that mirrors my experience of finding 'psychopathic' children in the historic record, but also of the strange sense of the familiar and the utterly different present in psychiatric archives. thepolyphony.org/2026/09/24/t...

What Happened to the “Psychopathic” Child?
Jesper Vaczy Kragh considers the history of “psychopathy” in child psychiatry, and asks what the contemporary discipline and the humanities might learn from the disappearance of this diagnosis.

Today’s arguments about disability benefits have been raging for 500 years

It's that time of year again: annual elections of Council Members for the magnificent National Trust. Should you wish to vote for the Nomination Committee's recommended candidates, they are on page 18 of your booklet. 'Restore' and 'Reclaim' are again in the fray. Votes are due in by 30 October.

Ah, that happened at the American Uni I was at (University of Kansas) back in 2001 when I was there. At the opening welcome to new students the valedictorian stated that 'the teachers here are better because they're all professors', which even to 21 year old me seemed like the cart before the horse

Don't have a proper gaming setup (I get too caught up), but the other day I happened to see that they sorted out the bugs on the mobile version of XCom 2 for my phone and thought 'well, why not?'. Long story, but I haven't spoken to my family in the fortnight since.

A question for music fans and/or paper conservation types! This poster, from a memorable gig of my youth, has been below a skylight for too long and faded to match the walls (pic taken off ebay is what it used to look like). It looks a bit sad now, but would trying to recolour make it look worse?

I think the idea that the UK's current schooling system is really excellent and that its exams-driven testing model is 'rigorous' is a perfect example of a country eagerly marking its own homework, using criteria it made up for itself.

When we run school archive sessions, one of the discussion points is age of patient. The kids often think average life expectancy was lower. They are unaware that average age of death was low because of the frankly shocking infant mortality rates- disease, but also the perils of birth and pregnancy.

The photograph shows a map with three islands in an ocean. The largest is called Sargent Island - this corresponds to the Sargent Gallery, Elva Island corresponds to the car gallery and the Island of Dolls is the costume gallery. The islands show dinosaurs on them as well as trees and a volcano!
