Biko is an extremely popular Filipino dessert made with sticky rice, coconut milk, and brown sugar. The day we brought her home after adopting her, she named herself because she is sweet as Biko pie. After saying goodbye to Baboy in 2024 and Wulo earlier this year, and still working through issues of autoimmune disease with Tooticus, it has really helped my heart bringing her home and getting to know her. ♥️

My dog Mr. Tooticus Rex is standing outside in my back driveway, down the steps and within view of my open back door. He is looking at me somewhat anxiously because I stepped back inside briefly.

My property has a decorative fence and is next to a park, so wildlife comes in and out of the yard whenever they want. This includes predators like coyotes and bobcats. Because of this our dogs have 100% human supervision when they are out in the yard. It is something the dogs have gotten used to over the years and so now they don't want to be outside unless we are with them.

My back steps look kind of crazy because we are attempting to train Tooticus to use a ramp instead of the stairs. So we blocked the steps with red wrought iron chairs. It has been somewhat successful so far. Lol.

A picture from 2015 with my dog Wulo (blond/white, blue collar) on the left and Baboy (blue/white, black collar) on the right. Both are pit bull terrier mixes. This is a long shot, taken at eye level with my dogs sitting on the driveway, and the park area behind them seems really far away. The picture was taken in the fall so there are leaves all over the driveway around them.

I unexpectedly had to say goodbye to Baboy 6.1.2024. He was somewhere between 12-13 years old. He was having concerning symptoms and I took him to the emergency vet expecting that whatever it was would be treatable...and it wasn't. It seriously was one of the worst days of my life, Baboy was the love of my life and my heart dog and I definitely wasn't ready.

Wulo was very different. He was fifteen when we said goodbye July 1. His last year with us he had been diagnosed with some really serious health stuff and pretty much any vet would have said we had a few weeks together. We had a year. And 8-10 months of that was really really good. The last 3 or so months, it got a lot harder, but we were able to keep him happy and comfortable. When the last day came, it was time because we had reached the floor where the concern was no matter how hard I tried, he would not be able to stay happy and comfortable. So saying goodbye was super sad and hard, but there is no feeling that we lost him too soon the way it was with Baboy.

This has been a really difficult 18 months and I just don't know what else I can say about it.

I am with my dog Mr. Tooticus Rex at a vet follow up visit. Everything is fine, just when he got sick last November (we almost lost him), the treatment protocol takes a year. We are in an exam room where there is a floor to ceiling window, so Tooticus is lying on the floor by the window in the sun spot.

Wulo will be 15 in July. He has a serious heart issue and also a progressive neurological issue that we are unable to diagnose because of his heart. Since being diagnosed last July/August Wulo's quality of life has been very good. But as of February 14 a couple of things have happened where it appears the neurological issue is progressing. We are able to manage the symptoms for now and keep him happy and comfortable, but the changes just since February 14 have been dramatic. I am not sure how much time we have left together. I am trying to focus on the fact that we are doing everything we can for him and he is happy, comfortable, eating like a champ, sleeping really great, and enjoying being out in the sun, but it is really hard.

On February 14 he had an episode I thought was related to his heart condition. The vet determined it was probably not heart related but strictly neurological. He recovered well, so there was nothing for it but to take a wait and see approach. But then he had another - more severe - episode on Wednesday. I took him back to the vet and based on the fact that the two events were 12 days apart and the second being more "classic" symptoms (but still mild) we have added a medication in the hope it slows the progression of the neurological issues he is having. Being close to 15 years old and having a serious heart condition, Wulo's comfort and happiness is our sole consideration. So after asking a lot of questions and receiving feedback that the medication has an extremely low incidence of side effects (drowsiness is really the only one), it made sense to add it. Fingers crossed it helps keep him feeling good.

Wulo is almost 15 years old now. He has had a progressive heart condition since at least 2020, but it was just diagnosed in late July 2024. The only treatment is a pacemaker, which is not an appropriate option for him due to his age and other health conditions. So we have been on comfort care since July. He has done really well, we have been on a plateau for seven months now where his heart issue didn't really change. But he had an episode last Friday, and while he appeared to recover, a follow up with the vet his heart rate is now down to 35BPM, which is dangerously low for a dog his size/age. Honestly, it is astonishing how well he is doing and feeling with it being so low. No one understands how it is possible. There are difficult decisions ahead as we watch his happiness and comfort very closely, but it might become increasingly out of alignment with his heart losing function.

This picture is from the product photography days, when I was adding my artwork to items like scarves, shirts, leggings, and tote bags. The artwork in both the scarf and the shirt in the background is what I titled "Origami Animals", which was something really different for me because most of the time my artwork is mosaic style prints. It was a fun concept and something new for me so it took me a long time to get the artwork to where I was happy with it and thought it was done. And I really enjoyed it.

My dog Baboy is lying on me looking very cute and snoozy. I made the blanket for him, it is mosaic crochet and the colors are those that I have seen in Indigenous American beadwork. They are stripes of black, red, orange, golden yellow, guava green, turquoise blue, cerulean blue. I wanted Baboy to have a nice blanket to lie on so I crocheted him one, and it took me a year to make because it is king size.

More about my reasons for not being around much. There is so much happening at the national level to wreck government in ways that will harm millions of people, both here in the US and internationally. And doom scrolling on social media is not doing a damn to change that. All it accomplishes is to make us overwhelmed and depressed and paralyzed with inaction. I simply can't do that. What I have to do instead is focus on the things I can actually do something about which is yes, is not going to fix the current state of things. But it will make a hell of a lot of difference to the people/animals I actually can help and will be empowering in its own way.

I'm here for it but it is hard watching them get old. #WuloTheOriginal overdid it and jumped off the dog couch (he is 14) and his back legs could not support him. He is not in pain, but I had to convince him to lie down so he would not panic. Fortunately he is comfortable now. ♥️ #DogsOfBluesky

My dog Wulo is lying on his bed in my WFH office, sleeping comfortably. He is 14 with a very serious heart issue and neurological issues that make him very weak, especially in his back legs. We are doing comfort care and he is in no pain and is happy, but we have had a couple of minor incidents where he has fallen and has not been able to get back up. When that happens priority #1 is to comfort him so he does not panic, because with his heart issue that would make his heart rate slow down even more than it already is and could be fatal. I was able to pick him up and put him on his bed and convince him to lie down. I stayed on the floor with him until I could tell he was comfortable and then he took a nap.

This is a video showing the morning trek my dogs and I make from the bedroom and down the hallway to the back door to go outside, and illustrates why I call my dog Wulo my Captain Underfoot. I took the video to show what I call "underfoots", where Wulo will be walking ahead and just stop, blocking the way forward and I have to encourage him to keep moving. It is because he wants to lead but he is not sure of which way we are going (even though there is no mystery where the back door is, haha). He has done this his entire life and I find it hilarious. As he has gotten older, my partner and I have started counting how many underfoots he will do each episode. The standard number of underfoots is three, but it is common on this specific trek to have a fourth one just as soon as we step outside, and sometimes there is even a fifth one (which can happen anywhere, really) that we refer to as the bonus underfoot.

I took Wulo to visit a friend of mine, we have been friends since 16 when we were in the same physics class in high school. This has been the greatest and most durable friendship of my life, through seismic life changes, marriages, divorces, children, spirited debates about electric vehicles, really great events, and really horrible ones too. This friendship has been a constant and one that has become more meaningful and important to me the older I am.
