A Murder of Detectives may be a village murder mystery, but it’s deffo not cosy. Sooooo glad I can finally shout about the fact my new book will be out next year with Bonnier in the UK, in the US with Harper Collins, and others elsewhere! Hugely excited for people to visit Combe Wyndham!

Saw Weezer last night in the centre of my grim little northern hometown, a week after Deftones played the same venue, where I saw Korn last year, with Limp Bizkit and playing the year before, among others! 15 yr old me would never believe The Piece Hall would become the best music venue in the UK!

Wait I haven’t read all the PD James books, which one is the new series based on? 😄

Behold, gratuitous Ford Capri content as the sun’s out, and it’s time for her to wake up.

Leakey’s is excellent, I visited when up there researching what became my debut novel, and scored Agatha Christie and Len Deighton first editions, and an amazing Bond US library edition, among others! Hence that book name-checks Leakey’s!

An excellent bookshop. I visited when up there researching what became my debut novel, and bought Agatha Christie and Len Deighton first editions, and an amazing Bond US library edition. So when my book was published, I name-checked Leakey’s!

Strangely these pictures also captured my imagination, of ‘X - The Unknown’ - the Quatermass film that wasn’t!

So, from an in-joke with my editor, I ended up with proper artist drawn covers. I’ll always be hugely grateful to my editor and publisher, and also the artist, that I have the coolest covers, and three amazing posters on my wall.

For Black Run I tried to specify the clothes but thought, you know what, here! I sent a pic of myself in my own hoody and jeans and jacket. So… that’s a sexy, murderous version of me. 😄 Only thriller with Adidas Shelltops on the cover? They also included my actual car, a 2007 Audi RS4 Avant.
Thriller book cover with a guy in a Barbour motorbike jacket and Adidas Shelltop sneaks advancing menacingly. Oh he has a gun so watch out. In the background is an aging container ship, and on the right side the French Alps, and an Audi RS4 Avant racing across the snow. There’s a beautiful one-eyed skier getaway driver watching on, based on the awesome German driver Sabine Schmitz

We all then agreed that the previous two books needed rejacketing, and new matching covers were commissioned for those by the same artist! For Anthrax Island I was suggested characters, and had input on exactly how the Ford Capri should look! Only book with an X-Pack Mk2 Ford Capri on the cover?
New but vintage style book cover of a guy in a hazmat suit, pondering a killer at large, which in the background a mysterious figure watches. In the foreground a Ford Capri races past.

They liked it, and a few weeks later they’d commissioned an artist to draw an original cover in the style of 70s action thrillers. (By the amazing The Red Dress) I asked for the Mil helicopter and the UAZ van, and the Soviet hotel in the background is based on one I stayed in!

Sorry, I may be biased but I have the best book covers in the genre 😄 When I sent in my final manuscript for my third book, I stuck on a vintage style cover I’d mocked up as a joke to my editor, using old Alistair MacLean books, among others:
Vintage book cover displaying an Arctic scene, a dude in a parka with a rifle, explosions in the distance, jet planes, all the best 70s thriller stuff.Vintage book cover showing an Arctic scene with a bearded hunky dude with a rifle, snowmobile henchmen, explosions, etc

As a massive Uncanny fan I was introduced to the concept of sick buildings by @dannyrobins.bsky.social, so this looks super interesting! As for me, I’m still on seasonal short horror!

I can’t lie, like 50% of his Lego used to be mine so I massively enjoy it 😁 yup, very good for the mind. I’m not fancy enough for the big Star Wars sets though. His room is a tip cos he’s mid-build 😄 but he now has at least seven big IKEA tubs full. It’s basically a Lego room.

I also got this for Christmas, and will be diving in this afternoon, Shrewsbury is looking perfectly misty today.

In Shropshire for Christmas, and my view is something straight out of a folk horror. Clearly the gallows tree from an MR James short on the horizon there.
An overcast morning photo of rolling dismal, drizzle-swept fields, split by an undulated dirt lane stretching over the horizon, passing beneath the skeletal boughs of a dark tree. In the distance the lane passes alongside an ancient gallows tree.

Your seasonal reminder that Black Run is a Christmas book. There’s a ski resort, Christmas trees, ice sculptures, biscuits, hot chocolate, smoking weed to Christmas songs, murders in a grotto, and snipers singing Band Aid, and Christmas Eve Maccies, I dunno what more you want.

There was a project in Halifax taking pics of properties being demolished around that time but unfortunately this street was either missed or is missing from the collection in the archives (not unknown). Th is is my period map showing the view, and the chimneys for reference which helped me locate.

I’m not much of a cheesiest tbh but even if I was it wouldn’t belong on steak. In truth we walked about for hours but never actually managed to find Philadelphia. It was just weird offices and buildings. We did find a small mall near the bell for a pizza pie and the obligatory fridge magnet.

Doing a Gerald Eastland. If you’ve seen the Jonathan Creek episode ‘Ghosts Forge’ then it’ll make absolute perfect sense. 😉
