Multiheme selenoenzyme essential for elemental sulfur respiration
Elemental sulfur reduction is a key process in anaerobic ecosystems and the global sulfur cycle. Although elemental sulfur serves as a terminal electron acceptor in microbial respiration, the molecula...

I got my official notice today that I was awarded the Humboldt fellowship. And of course I accepted it. I’m really looking forward to the next two years of technically being unemployed while I conduct research as—I presume—some sort of soul-searching hobby activity

I say this lovingly of my country of residence, but I’ve notice that it seems like a lot of German pop culture is borrowed from Britain and America with a delay of about twenty years. Here we find a band that has discovered the asthetic of circa-2009 Coldplay

Duncan Kountz @dkountz.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
Skimming a paper about methylotrophic methanogens and the gut and kept seeing “NMR” in the figures and the text. Of course, my brain went right to “oh they have a lot of metabolite/metabolomic data”. Turns out, NMR sounds stood for “naked mole rat”, whose gut microbiome was being studied

Drawing from my personal experience, I would suggest the issue is that you’re thinking about science at the times when you should be thinking about things burning in the oven

That would work! I'm 95% sure I'll be at the C1 GRS/GRC--I know that I can, I just have to make a final decision in the next few days and then register. Probably won't present anything however, but I'm happy to just attend. Are you/people from your lab going?

This issue is one of questions that you can immediately assume is discussed regularly by specialists (in this case, microbial ecologists), but would only occur to outsiders perhaps on occasion.

Duncan Kountz @dkountz.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
I therefore edited "anoxic microbiomes" to "microbiomes in anoxic environments", which seems more precise to my intuition, but also seems like clunky wording.

Duncan Kountz @dkountz.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
I wrote the sentence "Methanogens lie at the base of the chemical food webs of most anoxic microbiomes." But I realized that it might not be strictly correct to call a microbiome "anoxic", as that term might only describe the environment, not the microbiome per se.

Duncan Kountz @dkountz.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
Question for the microbial ecologists out there: do you make a terminological distinction between a microbiome and its associated environment? For clarity, the next post in this thread provides the sentence I'm writing/editing that this question is related to.
