Among other things, most of the population of Northern Ireland has dual citizenship, whether they personally want it or not. The Tories are essentially proposing to deport everyone who gets 5 years in NI to the Republic. I wonder what the DUP might think about that.

Mahmood's logic is the same of the race relations policies from the 1960s. So among the many questions she should answer is how the last six decades of history could happen if she thinks the UK is essentially identical to the 1960s.

Courses of language and civic that are not mandatory for naturalisation would probably reach much of the positive results more cheaply for both the target public and public finances

3c) There should be a citizenship course for applicants. There is in other countries, and, apart from the cost, when compulsory it does more to create issues of attendance, compliance, and how to teach citizenship meaningfully, rather than actually teaching citizenship.
110
Djordje Sredanovic @djsredanovic.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
3b) The test should not focus on history trivia but on aspects of civic participation - this seems a roll back to the first version of the Life in the UK test introduced by Labour, and I do not have much against it
110
Djordje Sredanovic @djsredanovic.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
3) The naturalisation process should foster integration - this has been a mantra since the 2000s, but there is plenty of literature showing that it creates problems. It makes access to rights conditional to vague 'integration' criteria which will exclude some and usually do not reach a clear aim.
110
Djordje Sredanovic @djsredanovic.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
2) Path to citizenship should be clear, 5 years (actually 6 at the moment given the 1 year to wait after settlement) usually, 10 exceptionally - this sounds basically support of the status quo against Mahmood's plan, and cannot be but welcome
110
Djordje Sredanovic @djsredanovic.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
1) Fees are too high: yes, naturalisations subsidise other Home Office activities, and the extra money is not even available to the citizenship team for potential improvements of the procedures.

I would imagine there is plenty of literature on cohort/phase of life effects on that generation specifically, as well as on how widespread mobilisations were in the 1960s. I also think 1968 in the UK was less of a mass mobilisation when compared to several other experiences worldwide?

My mother went to work when she was 10 yo, while I had the privilege of going to university and ended up (at least temporarily) in a very upper-class profession. The big question is: do we see the son of a surgeon or of a judge becoming a plumber? I have never seen one, and this is the problem.

Among the many problems of both this letter and Mahmood's plans, there is the talk of settlement being 'automatic' after five years. Settlement requires a complex application, an English language test or alternative evidence, and the Life in the UK test. That's not automatic.

Yes, the two concepts are often used together, and a lot of the points of intersectional theory were absolutely absent in Bourdieu. But I wonder whether rethinking some central points of intersectionality in terms of forms of capital could open new avenues of analysis.
020
Djordje Sredanovic @djsredanovic.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
But while intersectionality is about things one is (which can involve some rigidity, and calls for the concept of privilege) habitus is ultimately about things one has or had (forms of capital) which allows some gradation, and allows to see phenomena more specifically in terms of inequality.
100
Djordje Sredanovic @djsredanovic.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
It's July and late in the working day, but has anyone explicitly contrasted habitus and intersectionality? Both account for how complex social positions structure in an embodied way experiences and outlooks.

The deprivation of citizenship part has already been done. Indeed the Rochdale case has been used as a test to extend the crimes for which citizenship can be withdrawn.

Periodical reminder that 1) the UK government made all the decisions behind the Windrush situation 2) Mahmood either lacks or pretends to lack the historical and policy knowledge that would be required for the position she holds.
