Unexpectedly, one of the coolest things about Germany (or at least, Frankfurt) is that everyone has a really awesome bike. Like these are really slick machines with streamlined lightweight frames, precise derailleurs, well-fitted and aligned splash guards, and even hydraulic disk brakes seem […]

A code of conduct is the HR department of open source. It exists to protect the community and the project maintainers from bad actors, not to protect the actors (bad or otherwise) from the maintainers. Project maintainers are, by definition, accountable through very different mechanisms […]

It strikes me as a profound example of GraphQL’s failure as a technology that we’re not using it as the backbone of MCP. Feels like an obviously superior fit, and yet here we are.

After a long and winding waiting room… Cats Effect 3.7.0 has finally been tagged! github.com/typelevel/cats-effect/re… This is a big one because it represents the culmination of all the planning and scheming and hard work to make truly native multithreaded execution […]

I haven’t gotten yet to any spoken lines in Pluribus, but their transcode settings are already driving me nuts. Was all the mosquitoing possibly a stylistic choice?

After about a decade in PHP vulnerability purgatory, I have finally shaved the yak of extracting my blog contents from MySQL, converting them all to markdown, and building a Laika scaffold around the whole thing so I can host on GitHub Pages. I even managed to keep the old URLs (I hope). Styling […]

*opens editor instance on worktree untouched for six months* *finds still-unsaved editor buffer with an entirely plausible looking implementation of a very interesting function* *has absolutely no idea why said function would be required for the branch in question*

Random pet peeve: it’s pronounced “en-vidia”, not “neh-vidia”, not “nuh-vidia”, not “nnn-vidia”. Honestly not sure why this bothers me as much as it does, but here you go.

Random annoyance: tech reporters uncritically parroting the "we've proven that the universe isn't a simulation" line. The actual proof relies on definitions of computability which fundamentally assume they are contained *within our universe*. This in turn stems from a misunderstanding of what […]

I wrote a long-ish thing about implicit capabilities in the Cats ecosystem and shiny new lightweight support for user-defined (non-Throwable) error types on top of monads like IO: typelevel.org/blog/2025/09/02/custo…

The is diabolical... a Python object that hallucinates method implementations on demand any time you call them, using my LLM Python library github.com/awwaiid/gremllm
from gremllm import Gremllm

# Be sure to tell your gremllm what sort of thing it is
counter = Gremllm('counter')
counter.value = 5
counter.increment()
print(counter.value)  # 6?
print(counter.to_roman_numerals()) # VI?

DuckLake delivers advanced data lake features without traditional lakehouse complexity by using Parquet files and your SQL database. It’s an open, standalone format from the DuckDB team.

I’ve recently realized that essentially all opinion pieces about the energy/carbon/capital/resource impact of AI invariably spend thousands of words on napkin math figures based on shaky assumptions on how models and data centers work, all to come up with some bottom line number… And then they […]

I'm relatively certain that the fastest and easiest way to solve captcha these days is to upload the image to ChatGPT and ask it for the answer.

General rule of thumb: If you're going to submit a pull request, at least take the time to compile it and run the tests. I don't care if you used AI or not, but a pull request which trivially fails CI is a waste of everyone's time and resources.

I'm happy to announce the release of Cats Effect 3.6.0! github.com/typelevel/cats-effect/re… This was a gargantuan effort, and as I've previously mentioned (and discuss in the notes), it sets the stage for the future of CE's runtime with a series of almost entirely […]

For those of you using Cats Effect to do real things, it would really mean a lot if you could take 3.6.0-RC1 for a spin together with Fs2 3.12.0-RC1 (doing them both is important!) sometime over the next week. We made significant under the hood changes and we want to make sure we don't break […]

Fwiw (probably not much), I wrote an essay trying to describe a lot of Cats Effect's high-level architecture, the general problem space of asynchronous coroutine scheduling, how we (the maintainers within the broader ecosystem) think about these problems, and how we've gone about optimizing for […]

Look, I really enjoy whitespace sensitive languages, and I generally think braceless syntax looks nice, but holy hell the rules for parsing it are bonkers. Consider: (bar: y) => z bar: y => z foo.bar: x => z Remember the *tooling* has to handle multiple versions of the language, even when the […]
