@hadro.bsky.social built this tool that quickly "flips" through the contents of a work like a flipbook. Works w/ IIIF manifests, or plain item link from Internet Archive, Library of Congress, The Getty, & other sites. (FWIW, Josh churns out great things from his experiments. You should follow him!)

Flipbook
Flip through centuries of digitized books by wiggling your mouse. Paste any IIIF manifest. Make GIFs.

Is News Tower (2025) on your list? I've been meaning to check it out but then life got in the way

Agreed! I can't believe more hasn't been written about it. As I'm sure you're aware, Pride gets into it a bit in his 1950 thesis. I also touch on it (mostly bc Pride drew so heavily from Ayer) in a recent article in Scholarly Editing: scholarlyediting.org/issues/43/be...

v cool! I remember @dasmiq.bsky.social doing something similar back in the day by collating multiple exemplars. We ID'd non-determinism through hapax legomena.

Took me awhile to take the plunge & glad I did. It's so fulfilling

Recently got to see a typecaster use one of these in person. Am I seeing correctly that these are from the H.C. Hansen type foundry? Possibly Hansen Old Style? Very cool.

I had luck in defining each symbol as an entity so † == publisher. The OCR wouldn't alway correctly id it so I created a custom entity model that examined parts of the page. i.e. if my ocr model read † as + or =, it'd id it as a publisher. A lot of your symbols are very similar so could be tough.

I just finished a dissertation on US-based ad agencies from the same time period. These companies used syndication services to reprint ads via patent insides & stereotypes. Sad to miss your talk, it'd be great to hear more about large-running ad scams.

Probably later than your time period but I just released a dataset of late 19th and early 20th c African American newspapers found in the Rowell and Ayer directories for a forthcoming article: zenodo.org/records/1942...

@zoeleblanc.bsky.social @djevans.bsky.social working with serial data. Focusing on periodicals that offer insights into the global south as well as with copyrighted info. A shout out to @bschmidt.bsky.social bc drawing on his approach to sequence alignment. #chr2024
