NGONNSO OUR GRANDMOTHER
These photographs were taken during Marianne Balle Moudoumbou's Atlas der Abwesenheit seminar at the
Berlin University of the Arts.
The project was developed by Nika Hrlyn in response to the restitution of Grandmother Ngonnso to the Nso people.
Ngonnso Our Grandmother shows Queen Ngonnso with flags from different regions of the world as a means to emphasize the idea of family ties that this entity symbolizes in the Nso community.
The flags chosen for this exhibition represent Cameroon, Haiti, the Australian Aboriginal people, and Brazil - regions in which the Black population has a shared historical experience at a radical, constitutive level.

This text analyses the German government’s response in August 2025 to an enquiry by the Green Party. In it, the government emphasises its willingness to come to terms with Germany’s colonial history. How this will happen depends largely on ideas and political pressure from civil society. It is crucial that the institutional and financial weaknesses of Germany‘s restitution governance are quickly overcome.

fast fünf Meter lange Skulpturengruppe Dzom So'o.
Berlin.
Delegation an weitere deutsche Museen…“
