I’ve been thinking about the difference between being needed and being wanted. I wrote an essay about it. I Wanted to Be the Blanket, Not the Person. divyanshugoyal2.substack.com/p/i-wanted-t...

i wanted to be the blanket, not the person.

There’s a loneliness in being the person everyone turns to when they’re hurting, but rarely the person they think of when they’re happy. You start wondering whether they miss you or simply miss the way you make them feel.

The uncomfortable part is realizing that sometimes the person keeping you in second place isn’t the only one responsible. Sometimes you keep accepting second place because being chosen by them feels better than choosing yourself. divyanshugoyal2.substack.com/p/the-curse-...

Some people don’t break your heart. They teach you what it feels like to be the second option. And because they still care, you convince yourself it doesn’t hurt. Being cared for isn’t the same as being chosen. “The Curse of Being the Backup.”

I think there’s a strange grief that comes after healing. Not missing the pain. Missing the person you became because of it. The version of you who knew how to survive anything. The one who could read every room, anticipate every silence, keep going no matter what.

There was a Tuesday I sat on the kitchen floor with a bag of rice and felt something I couldn’t name. Old me would’ve scrambled to diagnose it, text someone, clean aggressively. I just sat there. Eventually made dinner. The feeling passed the way weather passes.

Some firsts arrive quietly, in empty rooms. You only recognize them when you’re already on the other side. The first time you sit with quiet and don’t pick up your phone. The first time a feeling arrives and you just let it sit there. The first holiday with an empty chair that used to hold someone.
