There’s a loneliness in being the person everyone turns to when they’re hurting, but rarely the person they think of when they’re happy. You start wondering whether they miss you or simply miss the way you make them feel.

Some people don’t break your heart. They teach you what it feels like to be the second option. And because they still care, you convince yourself it doesn’t hurt. Being cared for isn’t the same as being chosen. “The Curse of Being the Backup.”

I think there’s a strange grief that comes after healing. Not missing the pain. Missing the person you became because of it. The version of you who knew how to survive anything. The one who could read every room, anticipate every silence, keep going no matter what.

I think I’ve been called lovely more times than I’ve been asked to stay. There’s something strange about being appreciated by people who never really get close enough to know you. I wrote about the difference between being adored and being chosen. divyanshugoyal2.substack.com/p/youre-too-...

There was a Tuesday I sat on the kitchen floor with a bag of rice and felt something I couldn’t name. Old me would’ve scrambled to diagnose it, text someone, clean aggressively. I just sat there. Eventually made dinner. The feeling passed the way weather passes.

Healing isn’t the wall becoming clean. It’s the wall becoming denser. Layers of graffiti. Some still legible. Some turned into texture. All of it still there. You’re not supposed to come out unmarked.

Some firsts arrive quietly, in empty rooms. You only recognize them when you’re already on the other side. The first time you sit with quiet and don’t pick up your phone. The first time a feeling arrives and you just let it sit there. The first holiday with an empty chair that used to hold someone.

Someone said I was “so much more interesting than I look.” I smiled. Said thank you. Then spent the night trying to solve what she had given me. I grew up in a house where compliments were currency with conditions attached. So I became a translator.

I spent years performing careful living for an audience I invented. Turning off lamps. Swallowing the difficult thing. Building a private ledger of good behavior in case someone was keeping score. One day the room went dark and I realized the theater was empty.

We all have quills. Some people just hide theirs better. The tragedy is that sometimes two people desperately want to be close while everything they’ve learned about love tells them to pull away. I wrote about that. How to Hug a Porcupine 🦔 divyanshugoyal2.substack.com/p/how-to-hug...

We like to think intelligence protects us from manipulation. Often it just gives us better reasons to defend our existing beliefs. I explored why smart people can be surprisingly vulnerable—and what we can do about it. Read: open.substack.com/pub/divyansh... I’d love to hear what you think.

most suffering comes from taking your temporary self too seriously. loosen the grip. laugh at your own drama, skip the rumination, let small things slide, remember you’re just passing through this version of you. the less you cling to the ego’s script, the lighter life feels.

I tried to explain ADHD at dinner. Mom stared. Dad said, “We all have problems.” I stopped mid-sentence. Later, “lazy” looped in my head not because I believe it, but because I’ve heard it enough to question myself. I’m 29. Still learning my brain. Still showing up. That counts.
