What do ‘strong borders’ actually do for ordinary people? Our latest newsletter explores how borders are weaponised to scapegoat migrants, and why systems built to ‘protect’ by excluding others ultimately leave everyone more vulnerable.
On the right is an image of a refugee in Calais offering aid workers a cup of tea, holding a filled mug above a saucepan and ladle heated on a fire.

On the left, a quote from DA's newsletter reads "If you're an ordinary person... the truth is that no border works in your favor. A cage is a cage, and one day you too may find yourself on the wrong side. If that happens, your fate could be determined by the kindness and courage of ordinary people."

What’s it really like working in the humanitarian aid sector? In this month’s newsletter, we speak to Madi Williamson, executive director at Insight Collaborative - an organisation that trains humanitarian leaders around the world.
"Burnout in the humanitarian aid field is not like burnout in the corporate or academic setting. Lives are at stake, and mistakes can mean that people don't eat
(or worse)."

We’re looking for Backend Developers to work on our website. You will model structured data in our CMS to empower admin and ops team members to update website content in real time.

Our website project sits at the intersection of software, logistics, data, open source, and disaster response. It offers modern technical work with visible human consequences: better systems can help aid move faster, with less waste, to people who need it.

Stack: NextJS, TypeScript, Headless CMS, Radix UI, Tailwind, Strapi, Docker, Gitd

Expectations:
Volunteer commitment: ~5h/week
Work in a team: Collaborate at our weekly tech hangs & monthly sprints
No previous OSS experience neededWe’re looking for Backend Developers to work on our Needs Assessment Tool. You will build data infrastructure and APIs that will be the engine of our predictive modeling capabilities.

Our website gathers data on what aid orgs need & when. This lets us get the right aid to the right people at the right times, and will let us build out our historical dataset to enable future predictions. It also allows us to make bigger asks from our corporate in-kind donors!

Did you catch our newsletter this week? In it, we reflect on the word “Courage” which has been the leading theme of this year’s World Refugee Week. Should it require so much courage to reach safety? What about the courage required from us to stand up for what we believe?
The image has text on the left that reads: "Moria refugee camp, which was built to house around 3,000 people, had ballooned to a population of 15,000. Its conditions seemed unbearable—so we were struck by the dignity, creativity, and determination of the people we worked with there.

They shouldn’t have had to be so strong. The fact that they were doesn’t make the story of Moria less tragic, or galling. But if people who experienced such suffering could still fight to live full lives, what excuse do we have for not helping in any way we can?".
