in case you're wondering what kind of ttrpg campaign pitches my long-suffering players have to put up with, here's a peek behind the scenes
1. Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, 1815: The French Empire has fallen, but not before looting the riches of Italy and leaving much of the north in the hands of Austrian suzerains. Your patron is a Venetian merchant of noble lineage who has assembled a band to travel to Paris and restore to him a number of valuables—everything from paintings to rare books—which are rumored to have been taken into the personal collection of a Bonapartiste general. If the news is to be believes, Paris is currently in the grips of a new White Terror, a series of purges by ultra-royalists against the Bonapartistes, but only time will tell if this will hinder or aid you.
2. Empire of Ethiopia, 1440: Emperor Zara Yaqob of the House of Solomon has consolidated Christian rule over much of the Horn of Africa and as part of his efforts to improve relations with the Mother Church, he has ordered the assembly of a delegation to travel north to the land of Italia where, soon, a great council of all Christian churches is to be held in order to reaffirm the unity of all good peoples, but your mission also seeks to invite the skilled artisans, architects, and engineers of the Italian republics to return with you to the Ethiopian court to share their knowledge.
3. Pannonian Basin, 972: After a series of military defeats, the threat of the heathen raiders of of the Magyar federation have finally been contained, and this turn of events has resulted in the rapid consolidation of power by the pagan Grand Prince Géza Árpád, who is said to be a reformed who seeks closer ties to his Christian neighbors. It is now a race between Rome and Constantinople to see who can secure the faith (and therefore might) of the heathen horde occupying Pannonia. To this end, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Basil I, has dispatched a mission to Géza's court ahead of a tribal assembly to curry favor with the Grand Prince and his vassals.

Deranged
On the next page, under the header of safety rules and that initial warning, it makes doubly sure players don’t miss the hammer-blunt metaphor: “While intended to be hopeful and fun, it is shining a mirror back at the post-capitalist, post-truth, post-pandemic political idiocracy that we are currently living through… I have called the REPUBLIK the REPUBLIK so that we can say “I punched that Republikan in the face”. This is deliberate. I have called the GAME MASTER (the GM) the GOVERNMENT™ and the players the NEXT REBELLION™ because there is nothing scarier or more real than the corporatization of our lives, our philosophy, our entertainment, and even our dreams.”O’Neill was told that Roll20 believed allowing Rebel Scum to keep its political messaging meant that the company would also have to allow games from “the other side.” In emails to Rascal, Holden clarified that the company’s standard for overt political agendas could be “tricky to define, admittedly.”

“Anything that mentions or represents a real-world person, group, organization, faith, ideology, or political system is immediately suspect,” Holden said. “We have lots of games on our store that use contemporary settings, some set in places that exist in our real world, in which player characters fight some made-up shadowy criminal organization, cult, or mega-villain who wants to take over the world. That sort of thing is generally fine.”

“However, it is problematic to make a game that is, for example, about a specific town in a specific province in Canada, where the mission of the player characters is to beat up or kill all of the Sikhs who live in that town,” he continued. “Such a game would be against our rules, and we would either remove the title or ask the publisher to revise it.”

Let's take these two examples which are supposed to represent fundamentally different approaches to roleplay. (These examples feel easiest to compare because they're both are techno-fantasy-themed.) [2/11]
"Because the goal in these collaborative storytelling games is not “To win” (slay the dragon, solve the mystery, etc.) but rather “To tell an engaging and meaningful story, together,” a cool move is much more about how it contributes to the story, or the world, or whatever else you care to write about together. The cool move in Microscope might well be to say “Oh, wait, what if each of the psionic cyborgs had like, an astral umbilical cord situation, and sometimes those cords got cut and the cyborgs were severed from the Hive Mind and became independent? But it was like, an existential crisis each time?”—a move that solves no problems for the characters in its redefinition (indeed, it probably only creates more), only redefines the world in an exciting way.""A cool move in a post-OSR game looks like, say, using the engine block from your party vehicle to run electricity through the toxic oil seeping out of the facility, thus shocking all the techno-goblins inside. Or surveiling the vice president’s wayward child for scandalous kompromat to use as leverage in gaining access to a CIA field base. Or even just jamming a pair of sabers through the handles of a door to hold off the Imperial soldiers trying to break in. Whatever. The point is, a cool move involves using the in-world resources and options available to the characters in an unexpected, powerful way. The options available to characters and the options available to the players are, for the most part, one and the same."

This quote from @austinwalker.bsky.social about Realis honestly reminds me of the instant appeal of Troika!, where it feels like almost everyone who starts flipping through the backgrounds has a moment where they stop and think "ooh I just thought of a good one!" www.rascal.news/realis-ditch...
Quote from Austin Walker about his game Realis reading, "I've made a lot of stuff that has great fan reaction with incredible fan art, fan fiction, music, animation and everything that you can imagine. I've never made anything that has so quickly inspired people to say, I want to make my own class, I want to make my own thing, in the way that great tabletop games can do. Because it's just so easy. You have an idea for class, you write down four sentences, two bonds, and a few dream ideas. And the bonds and dreams aren't even necessary. They're like bonus things. Cool, done. Got it out."

Two posts from NYT journalist Jamelle Bouie reading, "as long as journalists and pundits act as if they are amateur political strategists & not people trying to understand and tell the truth about the world, they are going to take the implicit view that voters can never be wrong, which then demands endless explanation of their morally blameless choice... not me. it is not my job to say what a political party should or should not be doing. it is my job to tell the truth, and the truth is that a lot of people willingly abandoned their faculties to make a bad, destructive choice"

While I think the general discussion is worth having, one of my biggest issues with video game remake discourse is this: "originals" are allowed to be both of their time *and* "unique," whereas if the "remake" is likewise of its own time, it is a failure
Excerpt from a blog post reading, "The original (hereafter referred to as Silent Hill 2) has much that is of its time: the often-stilted performances, the tank controls, its distant camera which cuts to new angles with every room you enter. Bloober’s recreation of Silent Hill 2 (hereafter referred to as Remake) removes these elements and replaces them with slickness and sterility. Remake is exactly what I feared it would be when it was first announced back in 2022: a reverent recreation that nevertheless rubs all of the original’s unique texture away."Excerpt from a blog post reading, "In Remake, combat is less avoidable (there are even sections where you can’t progress until you kill a certain amount of enemies). James slips into combat mode easily. He pops out the pipe from a portal in his jacket as soon as an enemy approaches. He can switch from a gun to a melee weapon without any awkward scramble for purchase. He can do combos, and has i-frames. The result is something that feels both more and less hostile. The combat is tenser and faster. Individual enemies pose more of a threat and are less predictable. But it also makes killing less eerie. It is less like killing an innocent, and more like fighting video game enemies. It’s also more like Alan Wake 2, which is like Dead Space (2023), which is like Resident Evil 2 (2019). Remake reconfigures Silent Hill 2 to be like every other AAA horror video game out there."

Look, I hate "AI" as much as the next guy, but when there's apparently just a loaded 45 loose in the house I do begin to question whether the chat bot is truly the culprit
On the night of Feb. 28, in the bathroom of his mother’s house, Sewell told Dany that he loved her, and that he would soon come home to her.

“Please come home to me as soon as possible, my love,” Dany replied.

“What if I told you I could come home right now?” Sewell asked.

“… please do, my sweet king,” Dany replied.

He put down his phone, picked up his stepfather’s .45 caliber handgun and pulled the trigger.

ttrpg bloggers like this truly crack me up 😂 d20 rolls ruined role playing... my bold proposition is... extremely slightly different d20 rolls... please clap
Blog post headline reading, "How Difficulty Class and the D20 engine ruined roleplaying"Blog post body text reading, "No, the real point here is that there's an unintended side effect to DCs as a unified mechanic. There are other downsides to it as well that I will go into below too, but this first one is the big one.

It turns everything in the whole gaming world into a mechanical widget. At first glance, one might think 'marvelous, innit? It resolves everything.' A quantum gravity theory of RPG in one simple equation. But, subtle as it may be, as it turns out this is actually something horribly insidious that tilts the game in a direction from being a roleplaying game to being a board game without the board."Blog post body text reading, "With all these things in mind, what's the better alternative then? Here's my radical proposition:

A 'roll under' ability check + assorted other mechanics

Yes, the old school ability check.

'But Anders', the frustrated reader remonstrates, 'That is still a d20 roll!'

Yes, but the d20 die here doesn't have the flaws it does in the D20 unified mechanic, since we are not working with increments on the die to establish difficulty. There is a fundamental difference in approach however, that gives us a baseline for a resolution mechanic that we actually want to have:

1. With the D20 unified mechanic, you roll against the situation and apply ability modifiers
2. With the "Roll Under" Ability check, you roll against your own ability and apply situational modifiers"

"parts of the TTRPG community" is an weird way to say "the OSR." ZS was widely considered a bully and harasser outside the OSR for 6+ years before Amanda finally spoke up. the entire OSR scene has a deep debt to her and all of ZS's victims for supporting him as long as they did. gofund.me/ca6fbf48

im not reproducing the whole thread here but for my ttrpg folks i just want to say i think the latest chapter of "xandering" discourse is bullshit and i hope you agree :)
so justin alexander posted a big long blog post filled with timelines, clarifications, and apologies. you know what he didn't do? get rid of "xandering". his new post is just a smokescreen to distract from that.

the discourse around this has somehow gone from being about alexander rewriting history to credit himself instead of a trans woman to now being about whether or not jennell was okay with people using the term "jaquaysing" (she was, but we already knew that)

im glad the relatively minor issue of alexander vaguely implying jennell didnt approve of the term "jaquaysing" is cleared up, but the bigger issue that he's still trying to center himself instead of jennell in all future conversations about nonlinear map-making is still unresolved

thoughts watching that vi video essay: 1) having your labor gamified and playing a game are two different things; 2) so vi was a practitioner of abusive "therapies" but it's ok bc they regret it now while brandon is damned for doing the same even tho... he also regrets it now? 3) this feels like an ad for vi's editorial services; 4) yet another person "raising awareness" about the toxicity of the forge while borrowing ideology from ZS, who remains unnamed! wow! 6) my god how many times is vi going to deadname ph lee??? 5) the fetishization of adventure modules is something i dont think ill ever understand

always funny when D&D players try to caricature other ttrpgs and end up describing the D&D experience. somehow too simple *and* too complicated? rolls have a bunch of contingent rules about lowest and highest results? it's boring? buddy, the call is coming from inside the house
Skeet reading, "you're STILL playing D&D? look, you gotta switch to Whistling & Stained. it's somehow both so oversimple that it feels fake AND so complicated your players will hate it. first off, instead of a boring old iconic d20, you'll be rolling six d6s, doubling the highest and lowest, and then falling asleep"
