Displaced Gamers @displacedgamers.bsky.social · 7hKinda makes me want to tweak the machine to see if I can run it even better. 010
Displaced Gamers @displacedgamers.bsky.social · 21hI did the same thing! I also had a 486SX-33 when Quake was released. It threw an error on execution along the lines of "requires a floating point unit" or something of that nature. In a true "we'll see about that..." fashion, I ran a TSR so it would let me in. I think I managed 3 seconds/frame. 040
Displaced Gamers @displacedgamers.bsky.social · 21hSo I got my 386DX-33MHz back on the bench to resume work after a few… years… And I accidentally punched “Quake” in the benchmark menu. It… “ran.” 5231

I haven't used one of those computers in decades, but my fingers still have tactile memory from the school days. That key feedback is underrated and unmatched. 0110

Displaced Gamers @displacedgamers.bsky.social · 27/06/2026This is a MUCH different situation than console games. Console games - let's say cartridge-based across the same era - are a very curated group. We know all the games, there are lists, reviews, etc. GoG? Steam? There are many PC games that just are not there. That doesn't mean they don't exist. 1180
Displaced Gamers @displacedgamers.bsky.social · 27/06/2026Over the last couple of years, I have been looking to run various PC games on old hardware - including games I do not own. You'd be amazed at how many classic PC games from 1980-2000 just aren't available unless you buy a secondhand copy or eyepatch them. Kinda sad because they end up forgotten. 1240
