I did some mapping work in and around Cobalt. I had many a nightmare of being swallowed up by one! The terrain is...challenging that's for sure! 😅 It's cool to see some of this reclamation work coming to fruition so many years later!

Well I mean, I would respectfully disagree. Many very kind and wonderful people are found everywhere! But there's a facet to "being American" that I think collectively we've turned a blind eye to over the years. And the narrative of "But I'm one of the Good Ones" I keep seeing from the US is icky.

It's honestly also interesting to experience folks in the US perhaps begin to learn that we're not just "American but live up north"! 😄 Sure life here wouldn't be too alien in nature, but there would be cultural chafing points I think many Americans would be surprised at!

No it really isn't. I've lived in the Bay Area. It's still distinctly American in culture. I had many conversations where it was obvious there was a clash in many things. The constant fear based approach to life is one example. Our histories, origin, and resulting values are not interchangeable.

It's even worse: Staples US and Canada (technically separate) are owned by private equity in NY who also acquired Walgreens Boots in 2025 and promptly cut holiday pay and time off for holidays for the employees. Sure sounds like those "Great Canadian Values" that resonate with Dougie so well. 🙄

I've noticed this attitude from public servants before. The "Don't acknowledge things because we're above it" outdated paternalistic crap. CFIA is the closest I've seen an agency stop and say "Shit. We can't ignore what's happening anymore." once it resulted in credible threats to employees.

Having done years of fieldwork all over the northern half of the province I'm just astounded how little people living in Ontario don't understand the scale of their own province! And how many unique biomes it contains. The most of any bordered landmass if I remember correctly? 🤔

There are also far too many people in general who just do not grasp the sheer scale of land area and ruggedness in these areas. They're not flat, peaceful meadows! Much of that land is impenetrable even on foot. There's also a LOT, and I mean A LOT, of dry peat. That's just nightmare fuel. 😶
