Fun fact: Princeton denied Anne Carson her tenure. So a kind reminder that large institutions will often ignore you until you're too big to ignore - then they pretend to be your biggest supporters.

Today has become marked by debates over whose life matters more rather than mourning the loss of innocents. And that itself is a tragedy.

The adage "If you're making both sides angry, you must be doing something right" is overused, but in this case, the fact Mayor Mamdani's statement is angering both those mad he mentioned Israel's genocide in a statement on 10/7, and those mad he is mourning Israeli civilians at all, is... telling.

That mourning one human being can be interpreted as abandoning another. That we are continually instructed to decide whose child, whose parent, whose fear, whose shattered family may enter the boundaries of our compassion.

For those whose families lived through the Jewish traumas of Mitteleuropa, it isn't that esoteric why Zionism was once seen this way, even as it has now become Kahanism. The lesson here is not unique to Zionism, but the opposite - how easily liberation movements become the thing they once hated.

I could write a long thread on why and how Zionism was by many seen as an emancipatory movement in the early 20th century (and the contradictions involved) or on (marginalised) versions of Zionism that pursued Jewish national expression from an egalitarian position. But this seems esoteric to me.

NAZA is a film by Israelis primarily for Israelis. And *that is a good thing*. It is a thing that cannot be accomplished by palestinian victims. It is a thing we NEED israelis to do. The critiques of this film from the left+Palestinians come from a position of pain, but are inaccurate & not helpful.
