As a teenager I had a lot of fun playing with a tape recorder reading horror stories into the tape. Naturally Poe featured in these productions. The Tell Tale heart was perhaps my favourite.

I was born as the winds of change swept the African continent but this book connected me with a colonial past that was still very much in evidence. Such a good yarn. Of course it is easy to dismiss it these days as relics of an abusive past, but still worth a read to understand that past.

As a teenager I devoured these escape stories, Paul Brickhill, Eric Williams, Pat Reid. I loved the ingenuity, the battle of wits, and the heroic simplicity of it all. They were racy reads. The morality was simple and uncomplicated.
