Constraint generates conflict, and conflict is when characters are often at their most creative. So… yeah! See what happens when you add a weird limit, even just for one scene.

Years ago there seemed to be a lot of panic over what was and wasn’t a “Mary Sue”. To be honest, what is or isn’t “too strong” is nearly entirely illusory. It’s not your powers that are going to shape a character— that helps with aesthetics, certainly— but it’s your character’s *weaknesses.*

I’m given obvious reason to. (For example, customizable player characters.) That’s just my personal preference. I think it’s fun to see what I can make within the constraints of a setting’s logic, and if I made the setting myself it usually already has the “norm” I want.

An OC having “powers” or being “too strong” is, imo, an incredibly subjective concept that doesn’t mean anything on its own. That being said; I generally don’t like to design characters with specific powers or abilities that exist outside the rules or are rare and unique in the setting— unless +

DAY 6: Strengths and Weaknesses Well I suppose there’s two ways to take this prompt, one being in terms of character traits and the other being in terms of powerscaling. I think I talked about traits in my personality post so let’s talk about powers.

KingsIsle released a puzzle teaser for Ahmarra, where the pieces were scattered over different parts of Wizard101's social media pages. The community has since put it together. Here is our stitched version using the pieces (quality varied). We believe it's the loading screen!

that’s very true to real life. You can’t stop yourself from never feeling anger, for example, but you can always work to build better reactions and ways of dealing with your anger. With my characters, I’d rather leave people with the impression that they’re still in motion somewhere, rather than +

His static nature is in his premise— he never grows up. His legend and character are still being explored, adapted, remixed, and spawning new works from its inspiration because his condition is both infinitely mutable and never changing. We’re fascinated by him as a culture, I think, because +

From watching static characters, I’d actually say that them being “static” is kind of a misnomer— they’re sometimes the most adaptable characters in a cast! Take a character like Goku. (To my understanding of Dragon Ball) a lot of his interest comes from his reactions to others and how they +

Obviously there’s dozens of ways to make a character’s personality and I don’t need to say that. Sometimes you want to a make a character who is static or mostly static. Maybe you’re writing something episodic and just need a fun hero, or you want an ideal for other characters to see.

need to be as big as you have to go. You could have a character’s “contradiction” be that they’re very nervous, but they’re also a thrill seeker. The goal is just to have enough friction within their character/how other people see them that you’re less likely to get stagnant on the character side.

“mysteries” that you’ll see characters arguing over in Phase 3 is her cheerful and desire to nearly constantly chase “joy”. To characters who don’t understand her, this looks like shallow escapism. They can’t reconcile that outside impression of her with what she’s doing. Obviously that doesn’t +

Out of universe, the first major question is usually what I want that character to do, and what traits do they need to have in order to do it? For example say I need a character to push back against another character consistently. That’s doable. What kind of pushback is it?

DAY 5: Personality When writing a character, their personality often comes from their backstory, and vice versa. It’s such an ouroboros I sometimes have trouble actually starting a character.

She does this with the help of… the god of death, who also broke herself into fragments and a “reincarnation” on purpose to try and keep balance. Yeah it was basically a buddy comedy road trip with god lore. I couldn’t get it past the premise phase, so there’s no outline/actual plot beats.

Alice was Vira’s reincarnation until the start of the story. Basically the actual book would involve Alice learning that Vita was alive— her soul was just trapped inside the Earth. So she comes down to Earth to gather the remnants up and restore her to life before madness takes her.

Alice was a Remnant of the life goddess, the strongest of the three other goddesses and the creator of the immortal realm. When Earth was created, the life goddess— Vita, obviously— tied her power to the planet out of a desire to help it prosper. As humanity evolved, her power began to drain.

realized that no one really cared about “cool lore”. But essentially, the story went like this: A girl by the name of Alice was born in Heaven (it had a fancy Latin title I can’t remember), a massive world of floating islands. She was raised by the ageless goddesses of Sky, Water and Earth.

She’s a bit fairy-like in some sense. Her magic of focus is illusions and trickery, and she’s not afraid to use it on others if she’s in danger or otherwise obstructed from her goals. She doesn’t see it as a problem if it’s for the “good of her kingdom”.

This is Fenna. Originally I made her as an OC for something else just as a goof, but I changed my mind and I’ll probably do something original with her someday. Fenna is a sorcerer from a land that feeds on humanity’s endless nostalgia and willingness to pretend.
