I'm an anthropologist currently at historic Olivewood Cemetery, which is Houston's oldest remaining African American cemetery. Established in 1875, more than 1/4 of the population at rest were enslaved.

We still have work to do, but Olivewood Cemetery is thriving and we're so excited to keep building networks of support communities so Olivewood will never be lost again.
A serene cemetery with a surrounding fence and a lush grassy field, dotted with gravestones. The sky is the brightest blue that is almost turquoise without a cloud in sight. Some of the trees in the backgeound are at the end of their life cycle and do not have any leaves. This area of the cemetery is called Founders Row because this is where most of the initial shareholders were laid to rest. Families like the Bakers (angel monument) and the Vances (large obelisk) were some of the formerly enslaved African Americans that helped shaped Houston's black culture and neighborhoods.

I am part of a group that restores headstones in Houston's oldest remaining African American cemetery-Olivewood Cemetery. Our board, Descendants of Olivewood, is all volunteer. And we just celebrated Olivewood's 150th!
Two men are repairing a vault style grave with a metal A-frame in Olivewood Cemetery. A grassy field, with gravestones of varying shapes and styles including a large obelisk and angel in the distance. Behind these headstones is a visible tree line full of green leaves. The sky is blue with white fluffy clouds. There is also a wheelbarrow of tools used to repair headstones.

Is it going to be hot? Yes.... but we'll have food and drinks!

But then there are days when you see an adorable baby hawk, and all is right.

Preserving an old cemetery can be quite a ride. One moment, there's a disaster like a tree falling over and headstones topling over.
A large tree that was growing out of a plot with 2 marble headstones has toppled over. The 3 sections of each headstone have neatly popped apart with minimal damage. Ms. Margott stands next to the tree. She's about 5'7" for scale.

This blue jay is one of the non-scary birds I've seen today.
A blue jay stands alert on top of a white headstone shaped like an obelisk

Another gorgeous day at Olivewood. There were no volunteers today, so I got a chance to chill with the community at rest.

Just me doing cemetery things. Sometimes, those things require muscle.
