Going to school in South Africa in the 80’s 2 books stick in my mind. The loathsome “Wuthering Heights” - god I hated that book, and “ Cry the Beloved Country” by Alan Paton which resonated so deeply.

I did some research (googled it). Hitler - artist, Lenin - lawyer, Stalin - criminal, Napoleon - soldier, Mussolini - journalist, Pol pot - engineer, Mao - teacher. Mugabe - teacher. But yes 3 doctors - Papa Doc Duvalier, Hastings Banda and al Assad, but minor league compared to the others!

Pedents

Foot soldiers in the War on Error,
They’re here to save us from ourselves,
With Fowler’s Modern English Usage
(first edition, nineteen twelve).

They scrutinise each word we write
For typos, gaffes, et cetera,
Correcting all our dumb mistakes
To make our grammar betterer.

They sigh and tut and tell us off
For the rules we have forsaken
And chart this nation’s steep decline
By the care we should of taken.

Custodians of the King’s English,
They merely serve to keep it pure
And restrict, they hope, the ignorant
To three mistakes or less.

In doing so, they hold no fear
they will deprive a thing of life:
for it’s not important what is said,
what matters is that its right.

Yes I went to ECCMID last year, the 1st time since the pandemic and I found it overwhelming. Either I am getting less tolerant of crowds or ECCMID has grown too big or should I say ESCMID Global.
