Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Played Icarus yesterday with our TTRPG book club and got to arguing: What is the distinction between a STG and a RPG? And is it a necessary/useful distinction in the first place? I ask, because if I bought Icarus, thinking it was a RPG, I'd be sorely disappointed with it. As an STG? It's fine 010

Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Serious question: Do you think a TTRPG being "fun" is a good metric for judging if it's good or not? I would say no, since with a great group of friends you can pull fun out of watching paint dry, but I'd be interested in hearing other viewpoints! 020

Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 01/09/2026Edge It's hard, but possible, to make a good edgelord character. It just requires • Table consent • OoG cooperation • Actual character growth Unless it's like, VtM, then being an edgelord is kind of a prerequisite in the first place 😅 230

Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Pride It reminds me how even in my time in the hobby (since 2014) the perception of it has changed - mostly for the better It's nice to see people be able to take pride in participating in the hobby with less fear of ridicule! Keep your imagination alive! 010
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 29/08/2026Labour It makes me think of how many RPGs are labours of love (spoiler, almost all of them) People make games because they have a cool idea and pour their time, money and effort into it with little hope for return if you aren't previously established Really inspiring actually 041
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 29/08/2026Devotion It makes me think of the rampant tribalism in TTRPG spaces. No, your way isn't the only correct way to play. No, your favourite game isn't the only good one and no, everyone who plays a different edition than you isn't a "tourist" Next one will be more positivr again, promise! 000
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Another week, another chance to tell people about your game on the biggest TTRPG subreddit without restrictions! Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Hunger It makes me thing of resource management in RPGs and how very few games and even fewer tables/playstyles make that actually interesting and impactful Usually those tend to be hexcrawl (or at least pointcrawls) - Forbidden Lands comes to mind Anyone got any good suggestions? 030
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Podcast hosting platforms should idiot-proof more Butterfingered and deleted a whole episode instead of just the clip attached to it I think I'm going to lay off from the clips for a whilestatic.klipy.comJim Carrey: Stressed Out & Maniacal LaughterAlt: Jim Carrey tearing his hair out in a scene from "Liar Liar" 000
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 26/08/2026Regret Tangientally related, but I regret that I never got into LARP back in university when I still had time for that kind of stuff. It was always so cool to see friends making costumes and props. Just wish I took the plunge instead of telling myself "next time I'll join!" 010
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 26/08/2026Familiarity It's very easy to stick with what's familiar in this hobby, but to grow as both a player and a GM I think it's important to branch out and at the very least read, if not play different RPGs. That's part of why I started this whole thing! That and to justify my poor financial decisions 020
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 25/08/2026Distance Boomer opinion here, but COVID made me realize how much distance screens and devices put between us as I felt my passion for the hobby waver. It's the human connection of playing with friends behind a table that I crave above all. 000
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 23/08/2026Fortune This one gives me a chance to brag that my lobster is too buttery. I've accidentally curated a regular group for myself where, once a campaign ends, everyone fights for the right to GM the next one. We currently have a queue of... about 10 years if my calculations are correct! 142
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 22/08/2026Grit I was too young, but through tales this hobby was difficult in ex-Soviet countries. English was rarely a second language and everything disseminated here much slower. Hell, there were people who straight up learned Swedish just so they could play KULT and Drakar och Demoner. Crazy times 010
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 22/08/2026Charity It reminds me of how much the disparate corners of the TTRPG community have come together in recent years to raise money through stuff like itch.io bundles for varying causes. Warms my cold heart honestly 010
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 21/08/2026Another week, another chance to get the word out about your game on the biggest TTRPG subreddit! This week the topic is "Western" - spaghetti, weird, historical and every iteration inbetween Personally I've been reading @watcherdm.com excellent "Blood Prarie"! www.reddit.com/r/rpg/s/GmVn...reddit.comFrom the rpg community on RedditExplore this post and more from the rpg community 020
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 19/08/2026Promise It makes me think of the inherent social contract we enter into with the GM and other players at the table. There's many parts to it, but I think it boils down to: "We promise to facilitate enjoyment for everyone at the table and to not be hurtful" 011
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 19/08/2026Desire "His greed sickens me" I have so many games that I want to run and I keep buying more. I am especially a sucker for phyiscal copies of indie RPGs. Hell, the whole podcast started out as an excuse to get my friends to play some new RPGs and justify my questionable financial decisions! 010
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Directness As I've grown older and time is no longer in abundance I have started to value it much more, especially: • Games that do what they say on the tin • People that directly tell you if the table doesn't match with their vibe Helps everyone get to the "enjoying" part of the hobby faster! 033
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Intensity It reminds me that people view "stakes" very differently in RPGs. Ten Candles is a popular and "intense" game. Personally, all tension and stakes are lost once I know that the ultimate outcome is death. I need there to be the possiblity of survival, even if it is microscopic 110
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 16/08/2026Composure Humor can be a defense mechanism when things get "too real" in a RPG. As someone who doesn't play/run a lot of horror it's something I have to actively supress to not break the tension and atmosphere at the table. Sometimes that's really hard when I think of an especially dumb joke tho 010
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 16/08/2026Things are heating up (or cooling down, depending how you look at it) on Earth Prime! Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 15/08/2026Endurance As a GM I often times have to remind myself that a campaign is an endurance race, not a sprint. It's so easy to throw yourself into writing and prep only to burn out before the campaign has even reached the halfway point. I need to remind myself to let the story come more at the table 011
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 15/08/2026If anyone else is looking for a low/no budget way of making audiograms of your podcast then I've found a pretty easy option 1. Wav2Bar - free open source software that runs locally 2. Upload to TikTok for a pretty accurate automatic captioning and save it Not super tech-savvy and managed this: 110
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 14/08/2026Regard Saw System Hoppers do this so gonna steal it and just list some RPGs that I hold in high regard because they all taught me something about the hobby: • KULT • MörkBorg • Call of Cthulhu • Chains of Gaelia • Blades in the Dark • D&D 3.5 (my first ever game) 121
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 14/08/2026Another week another indie rpg thread! This time around we're focusing on relationships in TTRPGs - whether your game is about relationships or whether it's just an interesting mechanic, come down and let us know about it! www.reddit.com/r/rpg/s/6Db2...reddit.comFrom the rpg community on RedditExplore this post and more from the rpg community 000
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 13/08/2026Strain Many of us playing RPGs are on the... socially unconventional side. There's been many times at many tables where that has caused strain between players out of game. It's important to check yourself and to give grace to others - rarely are these things done from malice at a table of friends 000
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 13/08/2026The EU has new shipping regulations. Apropos of nothing, any bird trainers have suggestions for a bird that can: * Fly long distances * Be trained to fly between specific places * Carry the weight of, oh, I don't know, an average A5 book? Sending few pages at a time via pigeon is inconvenient 000
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Loss I live by the dice and (my chars) die by the dice. Often times an anti-climactic end is just as satisfying as a climactic one! Fun story of loss: D&D char died, freak crit - so be it. I start on a new char only to have the DM magically resurrect old char. I was actually legitimately upset 😅 110

Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Tact I've always played RPGs with my friends. This means I almost always have a pretty good handle on what they will and won't like and what are complete "No" topics. However, now as I've started to GM for a larger variety of people I feel like I've had to learn "RPG tact" not needed before. 000
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 10/08/2026Secret You need friends who play RPGs but aren't in your group, because goddamn is it hard to not immediately spill the beans about your new idea for the next session to your players 😅 042
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 09/08/2026Privilege I'm a cis straight guy and although the hobby has already gotten much more inclusive than it was in the past it's still important to foster a safe space at the table for everyone. Unfortunately, it's more likely that a chud will listen to me than someone with a different identity. 000
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 08/08/2026Resolve Reminds me of the indomitable human spirit or in other words: How fun and rewarding it can be in a world of gods and magic to play "John Fighter", a bog-standard human with zero magical ability or "chosen one" destiny. Just a guy who started doing the right thing and never stopped. 000
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Got another post up for indie creators to discuss mechanics in their TTRPGs on r/rpg! This week I chose sanity and general mental health mechanics. Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Mercy It's an important step in the journey of playing RPGs that you have to, at some point, play a pacifist (or at least no-kill) character in a game focused on combat. Mine was a grizzled, old dwarf Paladin in 3.5e that adopted an urchin girl that ended up doing most of the killing... 000
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 06/08/2026Reach It makes me think of how far RPGs have the ability to reach. Since we started this podcast I've been searching for and interacting with more indie creators and I'm always surprised by how far into different corners of the world this hobby has reached! I wish more stuff got translated tho! 021
Dicey Discourse @diceydiscourse.bsky.social · 05/08/2026Never done one of these before! Burden - It makes me most think of the burden of GMing. Prep, scheduling, running - it's all extra effort. But much like hiking up a mountain, the weight carried and effort exerted makes the view that much sweeter once you're at the top! 010
