Great to have Walter Joyce visit the UMMP collections today and deliver a nice talk on resolving trionychid evolution. Really interesting discussion of his approach taxonomy, using uniformitarianism, species 'invalidity', but not phylogeny. Had a great conversation about Indian turtles as well!

On Saturday we said goodbye (for now) to Mateus de Fraga Rodarte, who has been working in my lab the last six months. What wonderful energy and knowledge of turtles he has shared with us! Sad to see him go, but I know he’s excited to return to São Paulo and complete his PhD. Boa viagem Mateus!

Heading to China today to study early sauropods in Yunnan and Sichuan. I’m really excited—I have wanted to see some of these materials in person since I was a graduate student. By a strange and wonderful coincidence I have as a travel companion Dan Fisher, who’s headed to Chengdu for a conference!

I'm shocked and really saddened by the news that Hans Sues passed away. He was in a class of his own. He loved paleo and worked on everything, he was generous, he gave sound advice. Even more, he was genuinely fun to be around, especially if you could get his laugh to click into the next gear.
Hans created a label for himself on google scholar, "vertebrate_morphology_and_phylogeny", which to date he is the only person to use. One of one.
