I've been thinking and talking and writing about the death penalty for my whole adult life and the past week+ has been truly surreal and exhausting, not only because of the onslaught of horrors but because there seems to be so little historical memory of what this system is and always has been.

Nazis Would Award Hitler Nobel PRize

Helsingfors - Finnish and German newspapers suggest that the Nobel Prize should be awarded to Reichsfuehrer Adolf Hitler.

The German leader could claim the coveted prize on various counts, they say. Before the war he was an architect and several of his drawings and paintings are extant.

His book "Mein Kampf" has been a best seller. In fact, it is compulsory for libraries and schools to buy it.

But it is rather the Peace Prize which the Fuehrer's admirers have in mind. They claim that thanks to him Europe still enjoys peace.

A core part of the problem is that parents want their sons to be able to access male privilege more than they want to stop sexual violence. You have to let go of the fraternities. And the men’s only athletic teams. And any other boys clubs.

Maybe all-male hierarchical institutions that value loyalty above all else are, you know, bad.

I think a lot of victim-blamers of all genders don't want to think too hard about things they did while inebriated and whether they were truly consensual.

Every few years, something happens that will change everything. It's always the year of the woman, except it never actually is.

So this movie came out not long after I graduated from college about a woman who was gang-raped at a bar and the prosecutor decided to go after all the guys who watched, and it was based on a true story, and the movie was supposed to change everything, and, well, you know, that was 40 years ago.

Today I realized that Roberta Flack’s “Feel like Makin’ Love” occupies the square adjacent to Maria Muldaur’s “Midnight at the Oasis” in my head. Yes, they came out the same year, but also they share a musical and lyrical vibe.

1/ The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights just released its report on campus antisemitism and Title VI. I testified at the hearing. The report is unanimous, bipartisan, & debunks the main legal theories behind recent attacks on universities for allegedly tolerating antisemitism. 🧵

I am pleased to report that there is no overlap between my top 10 shows of the 21st century and the NYT's, and only 4 of my faves made the top 100. If you're not going to recognize Derry Girls or Phineas & Ferb or Malcolm in the Middle as genius television, I don't even know what to say.

Remember when we used to call coding errors "bugs"? And then we asked whether a particular attribute of an app was a bug or feature? And now they're trying to make us think the code has just "gone rogue" We've gone from mistake to bad intention to "it's not my fault!"

And while it’s unlikely, it’s possible that we could end with a 4-way tie for 9th place, if Chicago, Phoenix, and LA all win their last games.

Nearly every one of my clients, back when I was representing DV survivors in family law matters: If I'd known how hard it is to get divorced, I wouldn't have gotten married in the first place. Marriage is the only contract where the parties don't get to set the terms.

As a parent, my heart truly goes out to the Hannah-Jones family who now have the brutally dysfunctional college app process ahead. The excruciating balancing of what we want for the world and what we want for our own kids under white supremacist patriarchal capitalism - we should talk about it more.

I don’t think I’ve ever read such an honest and vulnerable piece, let alone by a high-profile journalist. Combined with a complex and astute analysis of the dysfunction at the heart of our K-12 education system(s), it’s the most powerful thing I’ve read in a very long time.

Everything AI does is the result of the code that humans wrote. So the only question is whether any particular thing it does is a feature or a bug. And then you can respond accordingly.

I've also been really grateful to past-me when I've taken the time to annotate the syllabus either as I go along or at the end of the semester about what worked, where there are gaps, what didn't work, and why. Past-me is not consistent, alas.
