every time I speak to my art friends I just feel so miserable at how limited academic language is and how cool and borderless, boundless and imaginative is theirs... Sometimes we need to un-learn the academic format to write without boundaries as if galloping on a horse across the endless steppe.

When you live abroad you’re obliged to give these away. So much that you forget how divine it tastes. I probably didn’t have this chocolate for myself in a couple of years 🥹if not more. Rahat chocolate factory from Almaty is the taste of my childhood.

One of the mothers of the deceased soldiers found out about her son’s tragic death while in chemotherapy. The family’s bank accounts are frozen due to unpaid debts. They live in a house that’s falling apart. She sits there on the floor crying non-stop. It’s so devastating 💔😭

I wish my social skills were better and I wouldn't just talk about "work" all the time. Meanwhile my mind is predominantly occupied by art, writing about art, unfinished ethnographies, Michele Foucault, Lisa Wedeen, "where to find a bookstore here" and "when can I escape to the library?".

reading Selbi Durdiyeva's draft work for tomorrow's workshop at the SRC in Sapporo and reading Madina Tlostanova's latest book gives me hope there's a lot to both theory & creative approaches to writing on coloniality. Both captured me so much that I lost a sense of time <3 I highly recommend.

No one went outside though. I don’t have a local sim so I didn’t get the notification. The habitus told me to pack the essentials, keep my shoes close to me and go to bed. The quake lasted for 2 min. Habitus told me to expect aftershocks. I grew up with earthquakes. It’s all fine. But scary 🥹

Yesterday there was a 6.0 earthquake off the coast of Hokkaido where I’m at atm. The shaking in my apartment on the 5th floor felt super weird esp when you’re about to fall asleep. I mechanically dressed up while the floor danced under me. I only realised the danger when I heard my neighbours scream

I grew up in Kazakhstan so earthquakes are naturally part of my habitus 🫣 & some funny stories from childhood. Then I lived in Ashgabat where I also experienced bunch of earthquakes. No panic, always laughing. But Hokkaido earthquakes disorient me which is the worst 🥹

And what a joy that Central Asian readers all immediately lock me as a theorist and what a joy that "What does it mean" became the most popular of my all books at home, especially among the youngest generation who stop me at exhibitions & cultural institutions & ask "It's you, right?" ahahaha luv

By the end of my PhD write up, I was firmly convinced I wanted to do social theory but with Central Asian roots. Little did I know, it is a lifetime journey of learning, being mistaken, writing tons and publishing much less of what's written, & constantly going back to refine my arguments.

Educated first as a cultural studies person with a heavy emphasis on postcolonial Latin American literary studies (in Basque Country out of all places <3) and before that as a home-grown writer in Almaty, in my grad school I was drawn to mix it all with the deeper understanding of Central Asia.

I often joke that this is the book I wish I had as a grad student (and if it was written by someone else). In grad school, I was mostly surrounded by a ton of social theory & the breadth of the so-called "postsoviet studies" where there was little about my home region.
