I see the Yankees brought in their closer to face 3-4-5 in the 7th , as all smart managers do these days.

Fantastic writing by @seatoseabaseball.com in our last Box Score Banter of the year. Hard to believe the series has been going for five years now, but it's still going strong as ever. Proud to work with all these folks. www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article...
Meaning isn’t something you create on your own. We do nothing in isolation, least of all this. Meaning is a dialectic, both process and product, an invisible mass filling the space between us that we breathe and shape as easily as air. It’s a conversation between teammates, between pitcher and hitter, between a fielder and a fan with a particularly tasty-looking basket of nachos, between TV and radio, between writer and reader, between the audience behind home plate and the one tuning in from an ocean away. It’s a dialogue with the memories of playing catch and ripping open card packs, with the faded marks of your parent’s pencil in a scorebook, with the winners and losers of ages past, with the hopes and dreams of every soul who was shut out from the game and kept on playing anyway.

I think my daughter has figured out that if she wants a snack from the grocery store while she’s out, she can just text me to see if we need something. Then, it becomes family grocery shopping (my dime) instead of snack shopping (her dime). Maybe she thinks she’s winning, but really we both are.

No, really, I promise you don't want MLB to be more like the NFL. Unless you're talking about doing a cool halftime show during the World Series. That could be fun.

Mets broadcast say "4th start in a row where Manaea lost it in the 6th". Someone should let the manager in on that data. Oh, after the horses have left the barn, FUCKING Andy Green thinks he should remove him. Jezzzus

If you aren’t watching the Brewers Mets, Misioriski has not been able to plant his stride foot and frankly he’s risking a pitching injury when his front foot slips every pitch (some worse than others). His velocity on his FB has been 96-101. Somebody intercede.

I'm not a newsletter writer, but I subscribe to one. I read about the lack of virtues of Substack; I learned there are better alternatives. So why haven't some of my undoubtedly conscientious baseball writers not left that platform? I know there are battles to pick, but they mostly left X (AFAIK)

How does the Mets organization have so little control over their batters use of ABS challenges? Even Gary/Keith/Ron shake their heads at such terrible challenges. The hitting coach should be relieved of his duties.

Again, a #mets manager sends a player with a .465 *OPS* to the plate in the 9th with RISP. This time as the last out. Not sure who to send up, but Vientos-Mauricio is just bad all around.

I can tell you this. If a #mets manager lets Mauricio bat in that situation they have zero interest in whether or not the Mets win. That’s insanity.

In a nutshell, Mendoza's weak managing is evident. Vientos up in B5; should have PH Young, and upgraded the defense. Just bad managing (unless he's under orders to showcase Vientos to trade him) #Mets

I'll tell you what is disappointing. The Mets trading David Peterson to the Cubs today. These two idiot GMs could easily have #Mets Peterson relieve for one batter in the last of the 1st game of the DH, made trade, then have #Cubs Peterson pitch against the Mets in the 2nd game. SUCH A LOSS!

I am grateful this month for all the LGBTQ fans of baseball (and for presumably some gay ballplayers as well). It should be a game where all are welcome. If Pride Month makes you want to say unkind things about LGBTQ people, please reconsider what that says about your own heart.

In the newsletter: yesterday @thefrankiedlc.news caught an ESPN reporter copying and pasting league and posting owner talking points verbatim. It's a good reminder what "insider" reporting is really all about. That, gambling, Morrissey, and much more. www.cupofcoffeenews.com/cup-of-coffe...
Great Moments in Labor Reporting

I haven't really been following the labor battle going on in the WNBA, but yesterday someone who is, writer Frankie de la Cretaz, shared an absolutely hilarious tweet from ESPN reporter Holly Rowe regarding the ongoing negotiations. See if you can see where the bad journalism happens. Trust me, it's not subtle:

[pasted tweet from Holly Rowe with owner negotiation points, preceded by her inadvertently pasting "just so you have on background -- no attribution to me or the league" which clearly means she was pasting a text from a league source]

Just a little reminder that whenever you see someone reporting information from inside these sorts of negotiations they're just passing along what league or union sources want people to hear. Most of it comes from the ownership side because most reporters are aligned with the owners due to their employers being in business with the leagues, but it happens from both sides. That doesn't mean you should totally ignore this stuff because the information may very well be accurate. But do know that when something like this comes out, it's coming out for a reason. Mostly to sway public opinion and to cast the other side as unreasonable. And always remember that these sorts of tweets from reporters are not exhaustive treatments of the issues in play. They tend to omit the unpopular things or proposals related to the actual sticking points in negotiations. Which is to say that when Ken Rosenthal tells you next winter about the great stuff MLB is proposing to the union, rest assured that he's not including the unreasonable stuff or the dealbreakers. Because whoever is texting him the sorts of things Rowe's source texted her is not including that stuff.

Most sports "insiders" gain that status because they have shown that they are willing to print, verbatim, whatever leagues, teams, agents, and the like want them to print. They keep getting fed that stuff because they don't, as a rule, report on their subjects and sources critically.
