Burnham and Healey don't need to fix all of it. Pick one or two fights — debt relief, a minimum tax on billionaires — and win them, like Brown did in 2009 and Blair in 2005. More for @projectsyndicate.bsky.social here www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/a...

How Britain Can Help Build a Fairer Global Economy
Danny Sriskandarajah urges Andy Burnham’s government to make the most of the UK’s upcoming G20 and G7 presidencies.

The UK chairs the G20 in 2027 and G7 in 2028 — back to back. That's the biggest platform Britain will have this decade to challenge a rigged global economy: debt strangling developing countries, billions lost to illicit finance, the world's richest barely taxed.

We've been waiting 40 years for a prime minister who promises to build a new economy - @dhnnjyn.bsky.social responds to Andy Burnham's first speech as prime minister.
Quote from Danny Sriskandarajah, Chief executive: At the New Economics Foundation, we’ve been waiting 40 years for a PM who promises to "build a new economy". What we need to see now are the measures that will deliver the promises he just made on Downing Street. The new government’s top priority needs to be early action to address cost of living pressures through policies like a national energy guarantee, rent controls and free bus fares for under-25s.

Andy Burnham set out a hopeful vision for people-powered success. @dhnnjyn.bsky.social responds to this morning's speech
Quote from Danny Sriskandarajah, chief executive: This morning’s speech sets out a hopeful vision for people-powered success. Three things stood out as particularly welcome: calling time on trickle-down economics, upping the need for public intervention when markets fail, and shifting power to people and communities. None of this will be easy and the proof will be in the policy, but it has the makings of the economic and political reset the UK needs.

Our next prime minister needs to challenge the status quo to provide immediate relief on the cost of living and rebuild the foundations of our economy. @dhnnjyn.bsky.social reacts to Keir Starmer's resignation.
Quote from Danny Sriskandarajah: Meaningfully improving people’s lives will only come when politicians stop sticking to the same economic script and actually do something bold to address cost of living pressures, restore public services and provide meaningful opportunities for young people. Our next prime minister needs to be brave enough to challenge those who have been enriched by the status quo, while the rest of us have been forced to take on more debt to keep our economy moving.
