Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Another new patch bird! First record of Summer Tanager at @maineaudubon.bsky.social’s Gilsland Farm, found on our weekly bird walk this morning. My 240th species on the property. 060

Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 09/09/2026The Duo is cool, but the most important announcement today is Apple Reference Image (from a birders perspective). There are so many auto AI “enhanced” photos being posted online that we need this. Excited to see what 3rd party apps will be able to access. 020
Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 07/09/2026This super cooperative Say’s Phoebe was my 262nd bird for Monhegan Island. I believe this is the 20th state record and 10th from Monhegan. 030

Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 01/09/2026Thanks for watching! That sounds like a great video idea. I never turn on data roaming when I travel internationally so I’ve learned from many mistakes of not having data while eBirding 🤦♂️. Most importantly, download the local pack BEFORE you go. Create a dummy list in the region ahead of time too. 110

Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Before Merlin, you had to ready books and study plates to learn birds. One of the greatest illustrators, Guy Tudor, passed away last month and if you haven’t seen his work, here is a peek inside a few of his books. Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 01/08/2026This is stunning. I can’t justify $129 for someplace I’ve spent a few hours, but damn, that a beautiful volume. www.sbnaturestore.org/products/bir... 040

Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 21/07/2026Took a quick trip after work to a remote pitch pine-scrub oak barren in York County, Maine and found my lifer Edwards’ Hairstreak; listed as endangered in Maine. Not a bad way to end the day! 031

Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 19/07/2026I spent the last month testing a pair of “AI binoculars.” tldr: They are a decent pair of binoculars that take photos/video for only $400. The real question I had is: “do we need technology inside our binoculars?” Solvia 8x32 Review: Still Learning? youtu.be/i62eCmi10cwyoutu.beSolvia 8x32 Review: Still Learning?YouTube video by Doug Hitchcox 140

Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 01/06/2026The parabola definitely gets better recordings (slight amplification and better signal-to-noise ratio) but is pretty inconvenient to carry. I’d say if your goal is to go out and get the best recordings, then get a parabola, but if you want to carry a microphone while birding, get a shotgun. 120
Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 01/06/2026It’s a Telinga parabola, the now discontinued “Universal Parabolic Reflector MK2” with a Sennheiser ME62 mic in it. It’s a great rig just big and I often leave it in the car, so I’ve started bringing a shotgun mic too as I’m more likely to carry it with me. 100
Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 01/06/2026Continuing my goal to record 200 species of birds in Maine, this Ruffed Grouse during the Downeast Birding Festival was a pretty easy addition 23610

Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 28/05/2026Picked up #416 for my Maine list at my favorite patch (Monhegan Island) during a field trip for the Acadia Birding Festival today! Also was my 3,200th county tick for Maine (notable as averaging 200 per county) 1150
Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 12/05/2026 Today marks my 18 years of working for Maine Audubon and another day with over 80 people on our bird walk! Birding has changed a lot and I love being a part of that growing community. 1493
Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 10/05/2026We’re at Kennebunk Plains picking up the last targets for #GlobalBigDay Rain is getting pretty heavy so a little birding-by-van is our mode of choice currently. 150

Doug Hitchcox @dhitchcox.bsky.social · 16/04/2026Picked up two(!!) ticks for my Gilsland Farm list this morning; challenging after 12+ years of leading weekly walks there. Long-tailed Duck (#237) was my most overdue, then Horned Grebe (#238) was right after. The incoming tide and spring ‘urge’ must’ve helped push them up. 020
